Welcome! I've just arrived in Busan, and will start applying for teaching positions soon.

Is it ever possible to open a bank account without a work visa? Thinking I would like one before the visa comes through. I have the usual 90-day American tourist visa, that's all.

Thanks!

I believe you can only open a remittance account without an ARC.

It might depend on the bank; at KEB, I didn't bring my passport (assuming, wrongly, that the ARC was all I needed) and I could not open a remittance account, nor get the standard debit card that could be used at stores. I could only get an ATM "cash card" and the regular account. I had to come back later with the passport in order to get those other things.

Of course, even then with my passport and ARC in front of them, they still spelled my name wrong when making my debit card. Rolling Eyes

I opened my first bank account with just my passport, no ARC. Your services will be limited without an ARC but you'll have a deposit/withdrawal account if that's what you want. I'm with KEB.

Lol.

I went along to KEB with only my passport, and no ARC, and they would only give me a remittance account.

An account used only for sending money back home.
Deposit money into the account, they instantly wire the cash home.
