The vid is here - it happened in Gwangju on Saturday at 11:50am.

The boy was threatening to jump from the roof of the Seo-bu Office of education for about an hour.

these students are pushed too hard from too young an age...

its time Korean mummies and daddies realised that NOT everyone is destined to become a doctor, lawyer, dentist and scientist.

Anyone have any idea what happened? I can't tell if he jumped or what happened. Looked like some great paramedic work though. Rolling Eyes

From what I can gather, the student went to the education office to receive some counselling along with his mother. After the session, the boy told his mother that he would be right back (bathroom break or something) and ended up going to the roof. Then after some time his mother became concerned and went to look for him. She eventually talked him out of jumping and the paramedics came. The report says his is now in hospital. I hope this boy receives some good counselling.

It is really sad that a child has such a denigrated ego to want to end it all

such despair and unhappiness

so many I saw in a boys middle school out in a rural town...many sad faces and loneliness...

peer treatment besides

and ignoramus ijeets who do nothing as corrupt school principals/viceprin./administrators - who ignore the behavior going on upstairs

and then the children see others jumping off a roof on TV as in "Boys Before Flowers" and can identify with it?

Was probably brought in for counseling because his grades weren't in the top 5% and was asking what other after school programs could be done so that he can be better than everybody else. Upon hearing that he'd be simply doubling up his hagwon schedule, he took the easy/smart way out (assuming this was his situation).

Then why aren't ALL the students who are "pushed too hard" trying to commit suicide?

If someone commits suicide over something like that, then there is very likely something ELSE wrong with them. The vast majority have it as hard as they do, yet they don't commit suicide or threaten to.

It's like some guy slashing his wrists over breaking up with his girlfriend. Is that she pushed him too hard, or was the guy screwed up to begin with?

<sigh> It's just too socially acceptable, or at least kind of "normal" in a screwy way to commit suicide here.

Leading cause of death between 20-30 years old Sad Sad, sad, sad.

Do you think these children are pushed too hard? Of course not all students are going to try to commit suicide, but the rates of suicide are far higher in Korea amongst people of that age group.

Actually I believe the rate is highest among middle aged people, like 30-45 year olds.
