If you're an English teacher in Korea, you have at least earned a Bachelor's Degree. Congratulations!

Having that degree, you should know a few things.

1. "r" does not equal "are"
2. "n" does not equal "in"
3. "u" does not equal "you"
4. The shift keys are just below the "Enter/Return" and "Caps Lock" keys.

I realize this is just an internet forum, but have some self respect. Are you too lazy to type those few extra strokes and make yourself look like an intelligent person instead of a tweenie-bopper girl at the mall?

If you write that way and think it is and should be socially acceptable, congratulations again! U R a moron.

well, this is an interesting topic. the argument can be made that its laziness or ignorance that makes people type like that.

it can also be argued that in this fast paced world we live in, the faster information gets from A to B the better. thus, cutting out extra letters is better. "u" reads the same as "you" to anyone born after '75 (or should i write 1975?)

we can also go deeper. what makes english a superior language? contrary to popular belief, its not that america or some of the most influential countries in the world speak it. if america spoke german, english would still be a superior language. why is that?...

linguists who rate langues rate them by their efficiency and they say english is better because when used properly, one can convey more information using less sounds. this is how a language is judged. not in its popularity (otherwise chinese or spanish would be taught around the world in other countries at the rate english is being taught now) nor its ability to sound good. i admit, french is a damn sexy language, but sexiness can only go so far.

so, english is superior, because i can take more information and say it or write it in fewer sounds or words than u can in another language. by this logic, using "u", "r", "n" is simply a natural evolution of the language to an even more efficient state. after all, wasnt it, at one time, correct to use Shakespeare's english? modern english may not look or sound as old english, but what is said takes much fewer sounds.

thou-you-u

the current evolution of the english language, no matter how much it makes some cringe, is an exciting thing to watch. and we should feel lucky we r here in this time to witness such a dramatic shift in the most pwerful and efficient (and thus greatest) language man has ever created.

OK, R U Kiddin Me? Maybe the one letter short cuts are best left for casual cell phone texting. Short messages that communicate more than their small size are grade A even if not correct grammer. English is too wordy and lengthy in my opinion unless it's a discussion where you leave much to be assumed or is common knowledge.

It took me a while before I understand what LMAO represents (I didnt know there was a website called urban dictionary, btw)

To OP, language is not circumference ratio thus is changeable...people use it as a tool to communicate. The ppl who created English writting system didnt really design the language in a scientific way, Why I is just one letter but YOU have 3 letters? Laughing

I undertand you though, just like I understand why Korean seniors are quite offended if I didnt use honorific words.

I can see the OP's point. There's no good excuse for crappy use of language.

"self-respect"

Plus, scribes used tons of abbreviations when they copied the Bible before the invention of printing--abbreviations are a natural part of language and blah blah blah

Too tired for this. Moving on...

Do you teach English? I hope you teach it better than you use it.
