|
|
Hi
Was wondering, if I was to purchase say a Blackberry Bold from back home, is it possible that SK Telecom, LG etc. would be able to connect my it and set it up to work here?
Anyone using a phone purchased in Canada over here?
I have no idea about cell phone internals so thats why Im asking. thx |

Korea only runs on CDMA 800 (850) cellular services, which pretty much locks out cellular phones from most other countries. What I don't know is if there are restrictions on the CDMA phone itself? As long as it's CDMA 800, will it work if someone can program it?
Nokia, iPhone, Smart Phone, etc aren't sold here, though it might be possible to purchase an unlocked CDMA phone like the Moto Q, HTC Konquer, Nokia 6265i, or the Nokia 6275 online and then program them to work here, but you'd have to be tech savvy and know what you're doing.
There are rumors that S.Korea might drop the barrier on foreign 3G phones in April - but I haven't been following the news so I could be wrong. |

short answer no. It will be a paper weight. What the previous poster said is not 100% correct. Korea does use cdma but the new phones are wcdma which can take a sim.
However generally you are not going to get an overseas phone working in korea. With a lot of running around a good deal of luck you may be able to get one working with only phone calls but no sms |

You can get your phone working if you had a provider in the USA. But beware you will have outragous bills if you do.
I was going to use my ATT phone here. They told me it be 1 dollar a minute + 4 dollars 1st minute connection fee. In addition even though I had the 1000 minutes that didnt mean anything as I was out of the USA.
So yea 1 dollar a minute. Your far better off getting a Korean phone or a Skype phone. |

Sorry I am quoting myself, but phones from overseas don't work here. Unless you are prepared to pay roaming charges and it is simply not worth it. Yes I have heard of exceptions but, I have never seen them.
Just do what everybody else does and get a korean phone, if you sign up for a plan the can be quite cheap.
Why make life difficult for yourself?
Unless you speak korean, know people and very very lucky you have no chance of getting it to work and even then I would put the likely hood of getting it to work at 0% |

| You can't use a foreign phone in Korea. Even if it supports their band of CDMA or whatever. I have a 3G iPhone that I can roam with for the low low price of 3000 won per minute, but when I put a friend's sim in it, it says that the network is restricted. |
