I have a nice new job at a high school in Changwon. Me and my co-worker both got freshly built English rooms with all the trimmings but there is one problem, we have a National Geographic map on the wall which has the dreaded SEA OF JAPAN on it! With East Sea in parentheses underneath. This had caused a great stir among my students and their parents. This map apparently is going to be removed due to its offensiveness or something. Am I wrong in seeing this as kind of petty? I kind of see their point of view but on the other hand you'd think they could just rise above it....

Yeah, but here it ain't called the Sea of Japan, any more than Dokdo is called the Laincourt Rocks, any more than Daehanminguk is called Korea. They don't see it as a political move. They just see it as "Your map is wrong."

VANK found a social studies book with Sea of Japan on the cover a little while ago.

This pisses me off much more than the Dokdo crap. The name is East Sea in Korean. 동해. Nobody is suggesting changing it to 일본해. But the ENGLISH name is Sea of Japan. Leave our language alone. It's not disputed just because YOU dispute it.

And if they want to confine the dumb-assery to Korea, fine. But it kills me when they protest to US politicians and bureaucrats to have the name changed on maps. I make fun of these loons, but it makes me want to write letters my own damn self, saying NOT to change it to East Sea, NOT to listen to these Korean quacks, and NOT to forget that Koreans shouldn't dictate our own language to us.

Well, what kind of kills me is that it say East Sea on it too, just in smaller and in parentheses. Explaining to them that's what everyone else calls it just seemed to piss the kids off. I typed Sea of Japan into google maps and showed them how it takes you right there then typed in East Sea and it put me in the middle of Seattle. Much outrage ensued. Then did Dokdo and went there but had the name Liancourt islands on it, that pissed em off even more. I got the impression they thought I did the naming. Anyways, I was just trying to demonstrate how things like that were different in the west and well, it went really poorly.

Language is not owned by anyone. Anyway it's not like hundreds of English words have made it into Korean, no way...

Not that I care about the name of a little stretch of water.

It is pretty obvious that South and North's Korea's protests to get the sea changed to the East Sea is nothing more than petty revenge against Japan.

In fact, I saw an article about something happening in the Yellow Sea today in the Korean Herald. Even though it is called 서해 (West Sea) in their language, they used Yellow Sea anyway. Likely this is because they are too chickensh*t to tell China what to do.

Good comment here on the issue. VANK was up to their usual tricks on Dokdo as well.

Korean ultra-nationalist group pays for New York Times advertisement about Sea of Japan

Quote:
Then shall we change the South China Sea to the East Sea as well, since that is how the Vietnamese refer to it? And the East China Sea to the South Sea, as the Koreans sometimes call it? How about the Philippine Sea to the South Sea, since it is south of Japan? Or perhaps Southeast Sea to reflect the view from the Republic of China? What about the Indian Ocean? It is east of 6 countries, south of 3 and west of two more, plus north of some French-owned islands! Should we put it to a vote? Majority wins?

I dont see any Korean campaigns to rename the Yellow Sea or East China Sea to fit the local names, which tells me quite a bit about what the real issue here is.

Finally, just to show you were South Korean Ultra Nationalists priorities lie, here is this gem:

Quote:
Members of the Voluntary Agency Network for Korea (VANK), South Koreas biggest ultra-nationalist civic group, are quite annoyed by the above map, which recently appeared on the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organizations website. What is wrong with it?

Korea calls the waters the East Sea and has requested the world to use at least both expressions _ Sea of Japan and East Sea _ on their maps.

The FAO map also misspells Ullung Island in East Sea as Ulreuno-Do and Kurye in South Cholla Province as Gurve to name two of the other mistakes.

VANK founder Park Gi-tae has called on the UN to correct the mispellings and add East Sea to the maps, and has stated just how important this issue is:

Before achieving its self-proclaimed goal of defeating hunger in the world, the FAO should rectify its mistakes on South Korea.

Now thats some reasonable thinking. Rolling Eyes

How about the Jakor Sea?

Better yet, how about the West Sea? After all it is West of Japan? Using solid Korean reasoning there...

I explained "Laincourt Rocks" to one of my teachers after showing her this thread, and explaining that in American bureaucracy it could literally take an act of congress to change the name of a place that already has a name.

"It's still wrong, but now I see why it's not changed. Korean government is the same."

When I speak Japanese, I have no choice but to call it Nihon-kai (Sea of Japan). If I refer to it as To-kai (East Sea), they may think I am referring to a bullet train route Rolling Eyes

I say we sell corporate naming rights to the disputed body of water (e.g. The Hamburglar Sea) Laughing

The Romans called the Mediterranean Sea Mare Nostrum (Our Sea) because they controlled every fvcking inch of its coastline, having conquered it all. I say let Korea do the same. What, Japan did it? Well, there you have it.

Maritime meetings that involved nations for the naming of the see were present and accounted for when the name was placed in Maritime books. Korea was not a country when this happened as it had been taken over by Japan at the time. So, sorry, the name remains.

Also, as another article in the Japan probe stated, there are too many East Seas already to name it that and that in doing that, it still states that Korea is the base for how to name it.
