We have a nice classroom to teach in, and we have a microphone hooked up. This is relatively easy and effective for the 3rd and 4th graders. There are always a few who want to sing or do dialogues. This helps us work with the rest of the class individually. However, the 1st and 2nd graders are way too shy to use the mic, and they pretty much just whisper when I ask them to speak.

Either the class is too noisy or there are other things I should be doing with these young ones to get them speaking more. We're functioning, but I would like to see improvements. Any suggestions?

Put kids in groups and try to talk to them one on one or get them to talk to you only in front of their group. One shy kid stops the momentum in a class if you want them to talk in front of the whole class.
