Q. for the Ladies here:

Do you think prostitution is harmful to society?

I am not talking here about "forced" prostitution. Does there exist something where a woman may rationally take into account her resources, the risk of potential prosecution diseases etc. and then say "Yes I will do that"?

Do you consider "room salons" to be prostitution?

I am just wondering about this issue and as a guy maybe I am not able to see the full issue.. Ladies input would be appreciated here in the land of Morning Frenzy

I have another question for the ladies here:

Why did you come to Korea? There are plenty of places you could go to teach English and earn some money that aren't full of sexist, abusive, perverted drunk men who constantly ask how much it costs to have sex with you and where the police will take a harrassment/stalking/rape complaint seriously, so why come to Korea? Granted, this is pretty much a man's paradise, but I feel sympathy for the female expats who live here--I think life must be very, very difficult for them. Am I wrong?

Why should women be in any better of a position to comment on whether or not prostitution is harmful to society?

Well I am assuming as a guy that I will be biased. My personal opinions might be biased because I "want" to believe them for other reasons.

Do you have in mind its effect on women or on society as a whole? Even if it's the former, why should ladies, unless they have been or are, prostitutes be in any better of a position to comment.? Why would women not be biased?

Do you think masturbation is harmful to your health? I consider prostitution as the socialization of masterbation.

The OP never said women were in a better position to comment. The OP just wanted to know their perspective.

Prostitution is part of society, harmful or not. It always has been and always will be.

I think it's harmful to women. Most women who choose to become a prostitute do it because they are out of options. Yes there are some who enjoy it and make a good living out of it but these are the minority.

Having said that, I'd rather prostitution be legal and controlled than a sleazy back-alley thing where the women are treated like animals you pay to ride on.

I don't know. Honestly I don't have a strong opinion on it.

Re-read the OP's comments again. Carefully. Then think. Then post.

To the OP:

I think prostitution IS part of society and that you would be hard-pressed to find one without it. Therefore, harmful or not, it seems as if it is here to stay. I don't think anyone can accurately judge its effects unless a society without it were to come into being. I also agree with Taya. Legalized, I think it would create far more benefits than currently exist.

And yes, I can think of a few scenarios a woman would choose to lead her life in that way. I think these options are some of the reasons women currently engage in this activity. I get the feeling, however, that this is not the actual topic you want an answer to. If I'm not mistaken, it seems you want a female opinion about prostitution in general. You say you *want* to believe them. Believe what? That they have made this decision for themselves? If you are not (as you say) talking about forced women, then for whatever reason, they have.

On a side note, do you think that we, as women, will all agree on this topic? I don't think you're likely to get one general answer for how all women feel by asking a select few. Just my opinion.

And, as for Michael, I've read a few of your posts. If that is how you truly feel about this country, why are you even here?

Miss

I appreciate honest and scientif response to issues. That is why I am more concerned with females opinions. As a male many backward think the issue simply because they want to use prostitues. I say that I may "want" to believe that because I have honestly had a great time at room salons. (Note here: This was when I was working for a major Chaebol and we actually had room salon allowances each month. I dont want to even tell the teachers here how much the budget was it is so shameful.) But those room salons were very top drawer and the ladies as proper and beautiful like a modern geisha. But they appeared to have the ultimate say if sex was to happen. They had the right to refuse. Maybe as a male I "want" to believe this is an acceptable part of society.

But as you mention perhaps the lady has no other choice, and believe me try to look around at the Chaebols for any female over 22. There are NONE. So if they are not allowed into the work pool that is a form of oppression in which case I should not frequent room salons as they enable the marginilization of females here.

Yes I am primarily interested in hearing females responses

Panda,
The socialization of masterbation is an excellent concept. I am going to think about that. Interesting.

I think prostitution is symptomatic of a harmful power dynamic in our society. I have no problem with prostitution per say, but the objectification of women and male dominance pisses me off.

Michaelambling- yeah, going to Korea is tougher than staying in my liberated country and my experiences are different than men of my age. But all of my experiences are different from men of my age. I feel like I am a hel of a lot tougher for having dealt with a slightly more partiarchal society. Huzzah for me. Women have different reasons for coming and leave with different benefits, and frankly I'd rather be a tougher person than have people ooh and aah over my manliness when I know it's a lie. Not to say that's bad, just that I wouldn't trade my experience for yours, just as I wouldn't choose to be a man just because it's easier.

prostution as said is part of society and in my opinion i think legalising it would help alot of the women that have to make a living out of it. however i truly believe there sould be more help and better options open to these women so they dont have to prostute thenselves.

I totally agree with panda it is socalised masturbation for alot of men, total laziness actually, if you need to pay for it then there is something wrong!! (if men want to believe thats okay, then thats a matter for themselves)

Micheal-- there are alot of countries much much worse than korea, that women could have gone to. From reading your posts you seemed to have decided about korea before you actually started experiencing it! open your mind, you can actually enjoy korea alot! yes lots of korean men are sexist, pervs but you can talk back to them. these man dont know what to do when a woman shows some power of them, or wont let then act this way. they cower like bold children!

I am sorry if gave the indication that I thought it was the lady's only recourse. I don't think that's necessarily so. It might be so, for some, but I think it is also a choice for others. Of course, I don't know first hand, as was pointed out by another poster, so I can only comment from my point of view. I do know of a few women (not working at these places, not necessarily Korean) that would exchange themselves for money or gifts. Prostitution yes, but just not in the form you are talking of now.

I can also say, in Korea, I am amused? (word choice) at the reverse "opportunities" for the men in society. I haven't yet been, but have plans to go soon to a Host Club as well as a Model Bar. Of course, not quite the same thing as prostitution but it certainly runs along the same lines. I know these places are frequented by mostly/only women. Does that make us backward thinking? Does that make my opinion on this topic moot? I have no idea. Just something else for you to consider. Perhaps it's different for these men than for the ladies. I can't comment on that. I do know that it's not something I've heard of in America.

If it's a moral issue for you, perhaps I am down for the count given my opinion. But surely, as you can see by the few responses you've gotten, we don't all agree.
