| My fiance and I are Americans. Next year we are going to elope to the Alps and get married. How can we make sure the marriage is legally valid in the US? Do we have to get married at the US embassy, then have another ceremony in the states? |

I did google it but I was curious if people here could tell me different info because many people have gotten married out of their country. Sometimes websites don't tell you situations you might run into.
I'm also wondering if they will let us do our vows in French! |

| Read the link again. Switzerland is one of the countries, like South Korea, that requires a civil marriage as opposed to a religious marriage ceremony. There are no vows for the actual marriage. After you get married, you can then have a religious ceremony complete with vows of your choice in French, Latin, or any other language. |

Yes, I did know that. We are planning to have the obvious civil ceremony then hike the Alps and have our friend do a religious ceremony. I supposed I used the wrong word. I was wondering if during the civil ceremony we can have the marriage done in French instead of English.
I am still a little confused, though. So, once the civil registrar (or whomever the civil servant is) marries us, the marriage is automatically legally valid in the US? Or do we have to get a civil marriage in the states, too. |

There's really no ceremony as far as the civil procedure is concerned. You and your intended complete some forms and you're married. Yes, the marriage is recognized in the US. |

hey, some people just want to brag about their wedding plans, then have others do all the dirty work for them!
But think of all you're missing out on- if your family has friends, you'll have to plan ANOTHER reception stateside.... or better yet, have her side do it. then you get off Scott-free! |

| ^^ I am the "her," and we are going to have a party stateside after we get back from our honeymoon. My mom is all excited for that and she wants to plan to have a caterer and whatnot, but my fiance and I seriously just want a keg of beer, some moonshine, and hot dogs and wings. |
