This woke me up several times last night...
The lesson topic is time. It doesn't matter if it's clock time, "in""on""at", or any other time.
I have five students this afternoon for a mini camp. 1st year middle school this week. 2nd year next, and 3rd the week after.
Their level is fairly low.
I've been racking my brains trying to think of something to do with them. The object of the exercise must be to speak in sentences, not single words. Small sentences are fine.
A 30 minute game...err, English learning activity, after a short lecture would be perfect.
I will have about one hour of prep time. Today is full marking high school writing assignments and preparing next weeks lesson plans.

Thanks anyone.

Hi Poet,

You could throw together a quick PowerPoint with pictures of clocks and the students would then have to say the time. Then, once they understand the clock and time (in English of course), you can pair them up and have them create simple sentences using time.

E.G.

(Student 1) What time do you wake up?
(Student 2) I wake up at 7am.
(Student 1) Why?
(Student 2) I wake up at 7am because I have to be at school at 8pm.

This is just an example, but, will definitely have your students speaking English and using the lesson's objectives in their answers.

If you are interested in more easy lesson plans that are ready to roll for times like the ones you are experiencing, check out my website at www.teachingenglishmadeeasy.com .

Thanks cubanlord. The first year students are doing the activity you suggested this week in class.
I was trying to think of some way to add an element of "game", ie; score and winner. For those less interested in English, cajoling them with some kind of competition usually ensures 100% participation. The students in camp were selected for participation. They didn't volunteer and aren't necessarily the most motivated.

Maybe make a dart board (grid) with answers instead of numbers...."At 8 oclock", "in the morning", "after breakfast", and have them come up with a question that fits....

hmmm....

You COULD print out a few clocks with different times on paper (about 10 different times), and give the students approximately 10 seconds for each picture to write down the different ways of expressing that particular time.

E.G. Clock says 4:15pm

Students' responses could be:

quarter after 4
15 after 4
mid afternoon
4:15pm
four-one-five in the afternoon
4:15 in the afternoon
etc.

In the end, the group that has the most ways wins.

or, mix the two that I have said. Give them a time and have them write down what is usually done at given time.

12:30pm - lunch, studying English, playing outside.

Then, have the groups explain the answers. The group with the most answers wins.

Just some thoughts,
Me.

These are low-level students, right? I figure as much if you are teaching time.

SOme of this is from my school's English textbook.

Give the students a big list of different activities, taylor it for them (if you have boys, put some sports, playing video games, etc.) If your students are older, put some music concerts or having dinner in a restaurant. Each activity should have a time, place and person (friend, family, classmate, etc.) associated with it.

The students then need to create a schedule for the next week. Give them a model sentence

On (day) at (time) (name) and I will go to the (activity) at (where).

If you want you can adapt it to just one day so they're using more specific times (ex: 7:45 p.m.) and just take out (day) from the model sentence.

For a bonus, list some question words on the board and try to have the other students ask at least one follow-up question to the speaker to practice natural responses.

Hope some of that helped
Good luck man.

This looks interesting. I'll see what I can do with it. Thanks. Good ideas, all of them.
