I was just wondering if there is any foreign woman in the whole of South Korea who has married a Korean man in Korea and managed to get her surname changed to his? (as per traditional western custom)??

I have been told it's possible and then told it's not.. if anyone has done the above or know of anyone who has please let me know.

Thanks,

Deb

Deb, even in Western Cultures women keep their last name.

It is just common for them to take over the name of their husband in practical use.

Even though no one really does it anymore, so instead of is it should have been was.

You are not a Korean citizen, right? If you have a foreign citizenship and want to change your name, then change it in your own country, following whatever guidelines they have, and get a new passport. With your new passport with your new name, go get a new ARC to reflect your name change.

Korea is not going to change your name for you. Your name is whatever it says on your passport.

Seriously. I think the OP hasn't really thought this through.

The only place you can get your name legally changed is your home country. Go through the process there and then get a new passport and come back to Korea and get a new ARC. It's a bit of a hassle, but then again, so is marriage.

Even if a Korean would like to do this, it'd be a separate process because it's not custom for the bride to change her surname to match her husband's.

The funny thing is, if you do change your name to match your husband's other Koreans might joke that your relationship is incestuous (though obviously not, since you're foreign). Korean husbands and brides very rarely have the same last name for this reason.

Very few people have taken it the opposite way, where the man takes the woman's family name. Why not suggest that? I'm sure he'll love that idea.

Lol. I know someone back home who took her husbands name. I silently laugh to myself whenever I visit.

I always thought an amalgamation of the two last names would be the best idea. Like Smith and Jones would become Smones or Jith.

This thread also reminds me of this:

It's easy - your maiden name will be on the marriage certificate, as is the case in any country, but you can then take your proof of marriage and submit it with an application for a new passport, and request your new name to be used on the passport. Then you can also change your name on driving license, bank accounts etc by submitting copies of the marriage cert. BUT it is big pain if you divorce and want to revert to your maiden name - been there, done that, too..
