|
|
My KT told me about a chance to work overtime if I wanted, for an upcoming festival. I checked out what they are paying and told her no thanks and she agreed.
Yesterday at 4:20 she informs me that the office of education in Yansan stronly "urges" me to participate in this idiocy. 70,000 won for 4.5 hours of work is not an acceptable amount of payment. On top of that, I don't live in Yangsan, and the bus service from where I live is attrocious.
It sounds to me like they couldn't find any teachers who actually live in Yangsan to do this (probably because they aren't paying enough) and now they want to force people like me who live way out in the country to come in and do this for them. Fat chance.
My co-teacher also informed that I would be required to work all weekend to which I replied a polite but firm NO! Then she asked my why I couldn't attend, hinting that I MUST be working illegally on the side or something. Morons.
If they are trying to get me to quit, this is a good way to go about it. |

I'm not sure about SMOE, but EPIK contracts clearly state that you can work in any POE affiliated office, school, campl etc... so it wouldn't really be illegal. Also there is the clause that states that they can make you work additional hours and days outside of your normal schedule. I use "make" with discretion as this is strongly based on ones interpretation.
In the Labor Act it is illegal to force someone into overtime.
Good Luck, and try not to burn too many bridges!

The contract also clearly states no work on Saturdays or Sundays.
I think they can "ask" me to work Friday, but my co-teacher telling me that I must work all weekend is way out of line! |

Well then you have 2 choices.
1: Make a stand and point to the contract. Be firm but polite and make it clear you will not go.
2: Show them your contract and say you don't work on the weekends but that you think this will be a valuable learning experience and you will go only this time. Perhaps gain some brownie point on the way.
All depends in how you present yourself and how you treat others.

If they had asked me nicely (AS WAS DONE TO OTHER TEACHERS) and suggested that I could pick and chose days and times, I probably would not be making a fuss.
Why is it other teachers get to work only Friday or Saturday or Sunday if they want, but I HAVE TO work all weekend?
My co-teacher just left and is now acusing me of lying to her as well.
I was teaching at my other school yesterday, and she kept calling in the middle of my classes to bother me with this, I told her I was teaching and would call back, which I did.
Now she thinks I was faking and demanding to know what classes I was teaching etc.
Perhaps it all boils down to my new co-teacher is not so good with requests, and she didn't really understand the offer...I'm not sure.
But I did not start this, when she first told me about this she said herself,
"I don't think you'll be interested in this, so I'll just tell them no" Which I agreed to. Then calling me in mid-class yesterday and trying to force me into something which we had BOTH agreed I would not do, this is not on.
So far this new job is a winner. |
