This is an interesting read. I wish they could have done Thailand as well!

I love Hawaii, and been there 3 or 4 times now.

I can see why they don't like the skit however. Most people around the tourism industry are actually very friendly. I never felt any resentment or condescending attitudes towards tourists whatsoever.

Actually, the funny thing is that mainland U.S., I almost ALWAYS feel the resentment of service industry workers everywhere (well, outside of immigrant groups with service industry type jobs)...I think the SNL skit is projecting here.

Not only that, but any waiter in Hawaii would be making some killer tips.

I'm sure it was more of a comment on general matters with tourism than a specific attack on Hawaii.... and remember, this is the NYC mindset re: tourism.... and horror stories about "the big apple" are a dime a dozen... or two. It really is the nightmare city you see in movies!

And isn't the Rock half-Samoan? I don't think he'd insult Pacific Islanders on purpose..... Florida State alum? well, sure.... but only natural. He is a Miami Hurricane, after all!

I use to live in NYC for 2 1/2 years.

All bartenders expect $1 tip per bottle they serve you.

Once I didn't tip, as I bought two for myself and date, and was going to order a meal later, and tip later. Since I didn't tip for the first 2 beers, they refused to give me the menu to order. I insisted I would tip now if they could give me the menu. They sent me away.

People in the tourism industry are kind to your face, but many locals do despise mainlanders and tourists. Part is due to history, but most is due to ignorance, poor education, poor income and lack of self respect.
