Maybe not yet...
My Principal makes an effort to enjoy his time at work. So much so, that he rarely shows up
This isn't what bothers me, but last week my group within the school was "invited" to attend a dinner with him at a Chinese restaurant, where the banquet was pre-ordered. Okay fine. No one wanted to go, but now since we had to be there the first thing the "Prince" orders is soju 56%
Okay fine~ the night went by (except for instances with meat, as I am a vegetarian) but today we get a msg pop-up that we are to pay him man-won because the budget went over. What??
I am not happy |

Tell him to close his hand into a fist, then fist himself.
Actually seriously, just ignore the message and hope it goes away. If they ask you directly, refuse. |

Yikes - by Korean standards that's quite a loss of face to have to ask employees to chip in for a dinner the principal inveted you to attend. |

I say he is padding his purse. Don't give to his personal fund. |

We get deducted per month about 20k for social events. Not really worth it over all because everyone leaves after about maybe an hour. Leaving a huge waste of food and drinks. Everyone commutes to the school so nobody drinks which makes me feel sad All that soj' going to waste. |

I think you should take the 10,000 won you were going to pay him and go buy and axe and stand over the principal until he agrees not to charge people for the dinner.
Problem solved.... |

That's a good thing....makes it easier to sneak off and justify it. |

What does that mean? Did you have a good time or not? I have gone out once with three different schools and have had students buy me dinner or lunch from time to time. I have really enjoyed eating out each time, even though I am at complete odds with my current principal with how she wants the English center run. The food was great, and when I order with other English teachers, we get treated as foreigners. We don't get the "Korean" treatment like we do when we are with Koreans. So, I don't see what the big deal is with 10,000 won. If it was 100,000 then I'd lay down 20,000 and say, "That's all I really wanted, so next time please consider this, and please don't take out the other 80,000 from my next pay", LOL. |

Exactly.
I'd tell him I need something in writing on the school letterhead why he needed it before I could give him the money. Explain that it's for tax purposes back home. |

wow, that is some major, major BS. sorry.
if you feel like getting a slight dig in, next time they invite you to a school meal just say 'sorry, I cant afford it.'
I still feel awkward when my principal pays for everyone's dinner or buys me socks (his go to gift, which is nice), but its (supposed to be) a cultural thing. your principal doesnt seem to realize this. |

I like leaving gifts unopened in my desk. Then when I finally leave, they can have back all the shit they forced on me. |

I'm thinking paying the money isn't so much a big deal
Rather it was the "principal" of the thing...

There was just an article in the Herald Tribune about this sort of punishment. |
