Ok, so...this is a product of shameful cyworld stalking. Anyway...I got most of what she wrote, it's just this last part that I'm having trouble (fully) getting. That is...I can't decipher any emotions out of it:

" XX은 좋은 친구인거같다

그냥 친구,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 말이다 "

I know someone's got a Korean wife out there. What have ya got for me?

"XX's is a good friend

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Is just a friend "

I'm not sure it's right though.

I'd translate the first sentence as

XX seems like a good friend. or I think XX is a good friend.

Well...what I'm getting at is that I can't tell if she prefers it just being friends, or if she'd like it to not be just friends.

I suppose it won't matter...i'll just ask her in the next couple of days anyway -- though I thought I'd get a heads up first.

ㅋㅋ .. it's not a girl I've been dating -- just one of the prospects that I'm thinking about.

I know the top line says something to the effect of "He seems like a really good friend," it's just the bottom line that's giving me trouble. "Just a friend..................________." I'm having a hard time with 말이다, and trying to detect if there's disappointment in those words or not.

Here's what I got from Naver Dictionary...

Quote:
We are way behind schedule. This design should have been completed by Thursday.
: 우린 예정보다 한참 뒤쳐져 있어요. 이 디자인을 목요일까지는 끝냈어야만 했는데 말이예요.
[일반] Well, most of us have very limited knowledge of French. So...
: 글쎄요. 우리들 중에는 프랑스어를 알고 있는 사람이 별로 없단 말이예요.
[일반] Why don't you take those shoes to the shoemaker?
: 그 구두 말이예요, 구두 수선공에게 가져가 보는 게 어때요?
[일반] But I have done this before. There was no problem... Excuse me, but are you new?
: 하지만 전에도 이런식으로 했잖습니까? 아무런 문제가 없었단 말이예요. 실례지만 새로 오셨습니까?
[고등] I mean what part of it had to be replaced and how you calculated the charge.
: 어떤 부분이 교체되었으며 얼마나 들었는지 말이예요.

It seems to me that "말이다" just means that something is a statement of fact. In your case it seems to emphasize "just a friend". But whether that's to quell gossip or as a statement of remorse is difficult to pull out. I wouldn't trust Cyworld anyways. I mean.. her parents can read her Cyworld page. I wouldn't expect real feelings put up on there.

Okay you guys, stop being cynical about having wives doing translating. A few of us (perhaps fewer and fewer) have studied Korean.

She says you seem like you'd be a good friend. Then,
그냥 친구,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 말이다
"Just a friend, I mean."

Yeah, 말이다 in this case means, "What I mean to say."
She perhaps is playing down the sex bit.
To me still looks promising for you.
