I am an experienced teacher from the U.K. Currently, I am thinking of teaching in a public school in Korea. I have been there before.
I taught in Japan, for a long while. I learned Japanese, and did a lot but left for financial reasons. I left in 2008.
So I thought in Korea I could save more money.
In September 2008, I applied for a public school job, in Incheon. The application was accepted, and then I was rejected. Apparently they had called a hagwon I'd worked in years ago. They needed a reference from the hagwon. Another agency told me that they didn't need it. As it happens, the hagwon had only kept me 6 months, and I was underpaid . It was the kind of small, cheap school I'd never go to now. I was a new teacher and made lots of mistakes, got no support or resources.
The other thing is, that I imagined if I got picked for a public school NOW, I could teach in a city, have a good rapport with students(I USUALLY DO, NOW), save money, play sport in spare time, go snowboarding in winter, et.c. Or would a public school be like the hagwon? Public schools in Japan are nicer than hagwons. |
