I am trying to pack and I dont know if I should bring my straightener or not. I would prefer to just buy one in Korea, but I think I read somewhere that they are nearly impossible to find.

Does anyone know where I can buy a hair straightener in Seoul? Also, how much will it cost?

Thanks in advance!

As in a perm?

They do magic-straight perms all over the place here.

There is a place in Itaewon that specializes in African hair (run by Africans) if that's a need of yours.

No, it is not a perm. It is like a curling iron, but instead of curling your hair, it straightens it. You plug in a straightener, run it through your hair a few times and vuala: the heat sets your hair to beautiful straight perfection.

They are all over N. America but there are also a lot more hair types here so I didn't know if I could find them in Korea.

I have also heard them referred to as a 'straight iron' if that helps. Also, here is a photo of what Im talking about- look familiar?

Cripes, as much as some women iron their hair here, I'm sure you'll have no problem.

I brought mine, it ended up being wasted space in my suitcase. It wouldn't heat up at all here. You can buy a hair staighters at E-mart (the Korean equivalent of Walmart) and they're relatively inexpensive. I think mine was around 15,000 (around $15 Canadian). It's amost identical to the one I bought in Canada for $80.

I bought my cheap and very hot straightener.. it costs like 15 dollars at walmart.. and when I got here I just bought the cheap little plug adapter.. it works great.. the adapter was like 1000 won from a random store. Homeplus has many straighteners if you want a new one.. it wont be a problem.. I was worried because my hair texture is thick since I am black but the selection here is great.. I will get a new one soon from Homeplus..!! You only need to worry about Deoderant!

I'd say it depends on how good you want your straighteners.
I bought some GHD's out here with me. They broke last year and every set I bought here were crappy in comparison - I resorted to buying a new pair of GHD's from a website back the UK which and having them delivered here. If yours are good and you have space then I'd suggest bringing them.

I highly recommend getting a 'magic straight' perm when you get here....you won't have to iron your hair for months it's awesome

If it's done right, that's definitely the case. Unfortunately I have never had one that is done right, regardless of how much I spend on it (ranging from 150,000 won to 30...).

May be my hair is just naturally wavy, so it doesn't remain straight.. but I love magic straight perms.. they at least make my hair flatter than not having one done.

As for the irons, they are widely available - walk into any cosmetic store in Myeong-dong or supermarket and you will be able to find them.

yeah I guess I can qualify my recommendation with the fact that although my hair is wavy and looks bad in it's natural stiat...it is 'white people hair' and probably takes more readily to the straight perm. That's funny though tzechuk, I went to the salon you recommended in Daejeon to get it done. Also, the koreans I know with magic straight have had sucess as well. For me it usually only cost 60k-80k. I have short-ish hair.

I would definitely consider one of those magic perms if I had the hair for it but it might do more damage than good... if you saw my hair, you would probably think I am ridiculous for wanting a straigtener because I have naturally very straight, thin hair so I mainly use a straightener if I want a really polished look. That being said, I don't need a really nice, super hot straightener, so it sounds like I will have no trouble finding one. Thanks!

There are straightening irons to be bought here, but they cost about 50,000-70,000 I think.

Magic-Straight is pretty awesome. I only had it damage my hair once, when I'd used bleach on it a month before. My hair is really fine. The Magic Straight should cost about 70-120k but you only need to do it about 2x a year.

No. Straighteners are really cheap. You can get one for around 20,000 won or less.
