I am on an E-2 visa at University X. University Y has offered me a professorship, which I can get an E-1 for. I'm three months into my E-2. I will start at University Y in September.

I think University X will give me a letter of release. Do I need this to get an E-1? What documents, if any, will I need? What process must I go through?

No matter what advice you get here things will mostly likely change at Immigration between now and September regarding rules/regulations/laws. The changes will probably have improved for E-2 Visa holders and will have been brought upon by the 100 plus E-2 visa holders who filed petitions with the Human Rights Commission of Korea. However, Immigration may continue to handle each visa applicant differently as it sounds they did with Ms. Vandom.

Please forgive me, I did not do any "research" before this post, have no personal experience, nor first hand knowledge.

Thanks--I believe you are probably right. I'm a bit paranoid about being blacklisted, as I really like Korea and want to settle here, plus the job is perfect...

How you play things with your current employer will be important. However, no matter what you do(how nice you are/how great of a teacher) they could turn on a dime. I don't know your situation but being worried is understandable especially when you aren't fulfilling your end of the bargain/completing your contract according to said terms/one year. You will need their full cooperation, if it comes to it tell them they are getting out cheap by not having to pay you any severance.

Yeah, and I'm going to find a replacement for them in the country--hopefully they won't get vindictive.
