So I'm teaching a conversation class for a bunch of Korean Kindy teachers, and the basic theme of my class is learning about different cultures and discussing problems/issues. We started with talking about Korea from a foreigners perspective, and now I'm moving on to America.

So what are some good discussion topics relating to American society? I thought about doing guns, but I am extremely tired this morning and I'm not coming up with anything too exciting.

Any ideas?

1. Who loves their children more, Korean mothers or American mothers?

2. How do you spoil a child? Compare American and Korean views.

Guns is a good one. Bring in some statistics on how many households have guns in them, as well as murder statistics for each country.

How about nuclear families? How often do people visit their parents and grandparents. Do you expect your grandparents to move in with you after they retire?

How long should an unmarried adult live with their parents? Different for boys or girls? What is the average age for moving out of the house?

Who should pay for college education? Who should pay for weddings?

What is the appropriate response when seeing two students in a fight at school?

If a teacher is unable to handle a disruptive student in the classroom, should that student be sent to the principals office?

What is a good vacation?

What is the definition of 'middle class'?

What is a good idea for a first date?

How many hours should a student be allowed to watch tv in a week? What is the average number of hours that elementary students watch tv in any given week? Bring some statistics.

What is proper ettiquette for visiting a relative who lives in another city/provice? How long should you stay in general? What gifts should you bring, if any?

Who should manage household expenses? Perhaps find an article discussing this in an american magazine and summarize it.

What is the role of a husband in regards to household chores? What is a husbands role in the raising of children? Does it differ by region and social level?

Is it appropriate for children to be playing violent video games? Perhaps you could find some statistics from a gallup poll somewhere about american feelings on the issue.

How often do elderly in the US. vs. Korea spend their final days in a nursing home? Should a person with a terminal disease spend their final days in a hospital or in a hospice house or in their home?

Their is a strong debate in america over euthanasia. It is legal in Oregon, I believe, although maybe that was overturned. How do they feel about it?

Discuss the strong cultural differences between different areas such as city vs. country.... inner city vs. suburb.

Discuss the often negative stereotype of living in an apartment building in many US cities.

What is the American dream? Is it "A wife, two kids, a house, a car, and a dog?"

Discuss areas of the country which often function as buzz words such as "west coast" "mid-west" "rust-belt" "deep south" "east coast" "texas".

What is the proper response for a parent if they find out their daughter is living with a man who they are not married to. Does it differ by political affiliation (conservative vs. liberal), religion, or socio-economic status?
