| I've tried watching that show a few times. I don't care for Anthony Bourdain. He tries to come across as some sort of bad-ass or something. Does he still wear that dorky earring? At least he doesn't like Rachel Ray; I'll give him that. |

I'm not a Korea hater, but that one really sucks.
She takes him to a Noraebang and a Kimchi farm or whatever. I know those are two iconic Korean things, but theres way better stuff to do here than that and the girl he's with comes across as the condescending, superiority complex having, C-word type of Korean that we all bitch about here.
I like Bourdain. Yeah sometimes he tries to act like a badass, but he also makes fun himself a lot and acts like a pus about some stuff. He's also pretty honest. He has an open mind, but he'll say if thinks something is weird or stupid. |

Agreed on all points. The gyopo he goes with is every gyopo stereotype all rolled into one. If I were a Korean-American, I think I'd be even more pissed off.
And yeah, Korea comes off looking like ass in that episode. A Noraebang? Really? They even made mention of the whole "people go to DVD rooms to *beep*" thing. The stupid taekwondo dancing boys? For how gung-ho "Korea-is-awesome" she was, she wasn't the best ambassador... |

I would imagine that depends on the point of view of the viewer. From the point of view of someone who has never been to Korea and knows little about it (most of the viewers) I thought the episode touched on what is typical about Korea and did a fair job. Sure there are better things about Korea, but I suppose we could say that about any short summary about any country.
Personally, I like the woman. As you mention she comes across as a "condescending, superiority complex having, C-word type of Korean" that many here complain about. Frankly I think that is because some here prefer the easy "I want to learn English types" whom they can use their English superiority over to pursue whatever goals they have.
Wow, imagine taking English out of the equation when trying to meet a woman in Korea, its almost like being back home and heaven forbid dating be that difficult!! Gee, a somewhat intelligent woman who doesn't crave English proficiency...they must be "C-word" types. I suppose that type of woman is out of reach for many and they would be better off to stick to the easy Hongdae bimbos. I enjoyed her energy and enthusiasm and found it refreshing and vibrant.
I'd never seen that show before, and I enjoyed several episodes to boot alongside the Korea show. Thanks for the link. |

| i think the episode wasn't too bad, but maybe i'm just biased. There are episodes that I couldn't stand to watch, but the Korea ep wasn't one of them. I think the Vancouver and "Into the fire" were much better episodes though. I think that episode coulda used some much needed improvement |

WTF are you on about?
Sorry if I don't equate snobbery with "vibrance." You're right she probally would be out of reach for me, because I wouldn't put my nards in her handbag and carry it around for her.
I know plenty of people that can speak English and don't act uppity when introducing people to new things.
So you find bitchy princess types refreshing, that's cool. Insinuating that I like sluts because I don't is much less cool. You don't know me from nothing so blow it out your ear.
P.S. You should know that she appears in other episodes of "No Reservations" and consistanly displays this obnoxious attitude you consider "energy." |

I'm certain I did not call you by name in my comments, so if you feel that I was taking a shot at you personally then you must fit into the category of people I described.
Everyone's opinion is different as you are well aware, but what you call a "bitchy princess"... I call a woman who is not a pushover and is not so easily overwhelmed by the English speaking foreigner in Korea. My remarks were not so much directed at you, or even the woman in the show, as much as they were about the type of women you described earlier.
Granted I did not see her in other episodes, but from what I saw in the Korea episode, I didn't see anything that would classify her as a snob or uppidy. Again that probably has something to do with the point of view of the viewer. Obviously given your comments, you would view her as such.
You say she acts uppidy when introducing new things...I cant understand this...would you not act the same way if you were introducing another foreigner to their first soju, or their first "chicken ass"? Of course when you are experienced with one thing and sharing that with someone who has no experience with it at all, you may come across that way..but that does not make you a snob does it? |

That's how you communicate? Quote someone word for word then claim to be addressing a hypothetical person who shares the same viewpoints? That's not how I do it. I was implicitly describing the woman on the show.
There's nothing wrong with strong willed women, but I don't see the appeal in being treated like an infant. I have very little will to dominate anyone and in turn have very little tolerance for being condescendingly educated or treated like a child.
Just because someone doesn't have knowledge in one subject area doesn't mean they don't have vast experience in similar areas (like Bourdain) and perhaps they don't deserve have their intelligence insulted. Yet this is how she introduces him to Korea, pretty much a strict lecture on why he should think Korea is great. "Look at all the Koreans Tony! They are all waiting for you!" and "Tell me how this couldn't be great!"
How about letting the guy form his own opinions on the good and bad of Korea? Instead she spends their trip trying to convine as to why he should love Korea as much as she does. I think it's pretty obvious that in large part due to her "Korea kicks ass" drum beating that Bourdain left with a slightly lower opinion of Korean culture than when he arrived. |

Yes exactly. I quoted your words to address the "we" in your comment concerning the type of woman "we" complain about here..which leads to believe that you are not alone in such an opinion and therefore are not the only subject of my comments. Don't take it so personal man...
I would agree with everything you said about her in that episode if she were a complete stranger before the trip and were just some English speaking person introducing different aspects about the culture as in several other episodes I watched after the Korea episode. However they were already familiar with each other and I took her enthusiasm as more of friendly teasing with the guy than a Korea kicks ass and this is why you should like it attitude. In the scene in the singing room with the other girls who were on and on him for not singing, I would agree your statements apply, but considering he had a relationship with the woman in question, I myself gave her a pass on her actions. That's just me.
I'm sure you are familiar with the common expression about opinions and
how everyone has one. I simply have a different opinion about how she came across in the episode. |
