It looks to me as if there is a lot to like in it.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/06/gates.budget.cuts/index.html

Quote:
Three key priorities are reflected in the changes, Gates said.

The priorities are a stronger institutional commitment to the military's all-volunteer force, a decision to "rebalance" defense programs to better fight current and future conflicts, and "fundamental overhauls" of the military's procurement, acquisition and contracting process.

Among other things, Gates called for production of the Air Force's most expensive fighter, the F-22 Raptor, to be phased out by fiscal year 2011.

Gates' new budget has one heavy-hitting endorsement already.

Sen. John McCain wrote:
"[The budget] is a major step in the right direction."

"It has long been necessary to shift spending away from weapon systems plagued by scheduling and cost overruns to ones that strike the correct balance between the needs of our deployed forces and the requirements for meeting the emerging threats of tomorrow,"

"I believe Secretary Gates' decision is key to ensuring that the defense establishment closes the gap between the way it supports current operations and the way it prepares for future conventional threats."

But I'll note there's no overall cut in spending. Its about the same as last year's, hovering just above $650 billion.

But the F-22 Raptor is so badass. How are we going to fight off aliens ala Independence Day without cutting edge Military technology?

The days of fighter jets will come to an end. Once energy weapons (lasers) come on line, anti aircraft batteries will be able to shoot down anything.

R. Gates seems to represent a good marriage between the B. Obama and the H.W. Bush administrations. Hard to see any turbulence at all in anything he proposes and the President approves.

This one could use a healthy Buahahahah evil laugh. Twisted Evil

There.

But something will be needed to neutralize those pesky anti-aircraft batteries. Confused
