They warned that the launch - banned by the United Nations Security Council in 2006 - would trigger international sanctions. |
Heres what I don't understand. From what I've read at least, North Korea is claiming this rocket as launching a satellite into space. What evidence does anyone else have that it is more than just a "communications satellite"?
How can the UN ban them from launching a communications satellite into space, America does it all the time? |

I guess my first doubt would be that the flying pipebombs they've produced and tested thus far have been anything but elegant and sophisticated. To place a payload in orbit requires a lot more than I think the North has. |

They know. If the Norks really were launching a comsat, they wouldn't spend all that money on redeploying expensive men and materials to stop them.
Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. BIG guns. |

Especially this wall/fence.
Gotta keep our cheap, unassuming, hard working labor from escaping. |

Yeah I realise theres no way this thing is just a comsat, but surely they would have to give solid evidence to the UN to impose such a ban?
And how can a UN ban affect their own nation anyway, its their country, and they will do whatever they want. |

Thanks for reminding me I forgot my Seroquel today.
Apparently the payload of the rocket is obscured; covered with a giant pillowcase or something.
They'd cut down on animosity if they stopped playing silly games.
If it leaves the ground, I hope Japan shoots it down. |

First, they did exactly the same thing in 1998. Said it was a satellite but turned out to be a missile.
Second, it goes against the missile treaty they signed in 2006 which allows the UN Security Council to impose sanctions. But the same old same old, China and Russia won't support any sanctions with bite.
Third, the Norks don't care about 1 and 2, unlike most other countries that want to be in the international fold and not look like idiots for blatantly lying. |

No worry. If they were really out to nuke us all, do you think they'd tell us ahead of time when they were going to pull it off? They're just fighting for their right to have and use missiles, be it for rocketry or warfare. It might simply be an intimidation strategy to put the neighbors in check as if it were a game of chess. Check mate comes as a surprise; not an announced strategy for your next moves to put your oppenent in check mate. Note the difference between check and checkmate. |

China has stated that they will not block sanctions!!!! China which increasingly has more in common with the West is done with North Korea except for installing a puppet regime when Kim is officially declared dead. The "Right" to have missles? the right to have missles means that you do not threaten your neighbors with turning their country into a sea of fire. Dont bomb airports, dont send murder teams in to your neighbor ingcountry. Dont kidnap citizens of another nation. These are a few of the reasons that the community of nations has a problem with the North possessing ballistic missles. |

Geo-politics aside, it will be interesting to see what happens - and if it plays with the won. |

Step 1. Put them back on the terror list.
Step 2. Take it to the UNSC.
Step 3. Impose sanctions on all banks and economic institutions that deal with NK.
The US doesnt need anyone's approval for step 1 and 3. |

bluelake,
There was an article on CNN about Iran being heavily involved with the build of this NK missile. It might work this time around.
Personally, I'd laugh my ass off if it blew up on the launch pad. |
