Does anyone here know anything about Sungkyunkwan University?
I'm probably going to be studying there in the fall, and I'm wondering if there's anything I should know before hopping on the plane to Korea. I've already googled it, but there's not much in the way of helpful info out there outside of the official website. |

I bet you're looking for something useful, important, or just interesting. In which case, I can offer no help whatsoever.
But I can tell you, that university is not a million miles removed from Fortaleza Real de Guru em Escarpa. Not a million miles. Sort of down at the bottom of the Escarpa.
Although the front gate of that university is currently in sorry disarray, the surrounding Lowlands have much to recommend them, particularly the nearby Taehang-no district with its live jazz bars, pizzerias, libertine cigarette-smoking college women and other scenesters & sophisticates.
The university? Oldest in the country, Confucian, kinda centrally located, probably in the nation's top 10 or very close. But they really should fix that damn gate. |

It's a nice area. One thing you'll want to remember is this:
The main street in daehongno/Taehongno Heywha area: the side with the TGIF/Krispy Kreme/Mcdonalds is more expensive in terms of restaurants and entertainment venues than the opposite side of the street. Has been that way for a long time. The good news is that while there are a good number of fellow ex patriots in the area, there are few if any nightclubs, so it's a great place to go hang out. No GIs, no tough wanna be gangster Kyopos, this has all been said before.
Search the following terms one by one in this website and read the threads.
Platters
Comfort Zone
Daehongno
Taehongno
Heywha
Heywa
Also send a pm to Bibbitybop, he's lived there for a long time and can answer any questions about the area.
Good luck |

Actually, I'm not sure, but I may end up at the Suwon campus since I'm an engineering student. Then again, they may just stick all of the international students on the Seoul campus. I'm not entirely sure at this point.
I probably should have stated that at the beginning.
Still, good info, guys. |

i've studied korean at the seoul campus the last few summers. during that time i met some of their full-time international students, and it did seem like at least a few of them had to split time between the seoul and suwon campuses. not exactly a short trip between the two.
pretty good school though. i believe it's actually regarded as number 4 or 5, just off the big 3. koreans always seem impressed when i tell them where i studied their language. i've tried to explain that money is really all you need to get in, but they don't seem to understand or care. |

I've been two semesters in SKKU as an exchange student. Since I have a business major, I study at Seoul campus.
If you are an exchange student, the campus you will be located in probably depends on the courses you select. So, if you are satisfied with the Seoul campus course offering, you will study there. Seoul campus has few IT-related courses but practically the engineering stuff is taught at Suwon campus. Even if you end up studying in Suwon though, you can request to stay in Seoul campus dormitory. But, that means about 1,5hours one way commuting.
Anyhow, SKKU Seoul campus location is great. You can easily reach good shopping or some historical sites by bus or the line#4 subway. Just around main gate and side gate you can find lots of cheap restaurants and cheap beer. Daehakno area is one of my favourites in Seoul.
Suwon campus is a bit remote. I've been there couple of times and compared to Seoul campus, it's huge. I was impressed by the new facilities they were building there, very modern. Probably you will find more western exchange student at Seoul campus but you will have the same partying at Suwon as in Seoul. So, studying in Suwon shouldn't be bad at all. The difference is just that it's not in Seoul. |
