Bad economy=more people losing jobs and savings= more depressed people=more desperate people=more people willing to act on crazy notions than when they're secure and happy.

And, besides, this kind of stuff, unfortunately, happens regularly, it's just usually a local news matter rather than national news.

Failing that, I'd just blame GTA IV.

I, too, have shared similar sentiments in regards to the way things are in my home country now. Going home just a year ago yielded me a few run-ins with not so friendly people. All of those run-ins weren't even provoked!!!! Just people with bad tempers, and unfortunately with the way the economic situation is, it is just going to get worse. I couldn't help but to wonder how I was part of that society. I will be again, someday, but at least for now I can enjoy not having to worry about someone whipping out a glock because I "looked" at him the wrong way.

I agree with that. People are under a lot of stress and some are snapping. There was a similar phenomenon in the early 30's. John Dilinger and Pretty Boy Floyd were robbing banks left and right and the public wasn't all that upset since it was the fat cats getting their due. This time, the violence is much more diffuse and unfocused.

There is another aspect to some of the violence. Last Saturday's police killings seem to be (at least partly) related to a political fear:

What a Killer Was Watching

"Poplawski was a neo-Nazi wannabe who railed against blacks, Jews, Zionists, and gun control. And like many members of the far-right fringe, he allegedly visited Jones Web sites and posted alarming reports by Jones writers on Stormfront, a white-supremacist message board. (Poplawskis posts are here, authored under the handle, Braced For Fate.) While Alex Jones generally avoids overt racism, he has found an eager audience on Stormfront by conjuring dark visions of an impending New World Order, claiming FEMA is secretly building a national concentration-camp network, and announcing that President Barack Obama has planned mass gun seizures on his way to establishing a leftist dictatorship. Remember, the first step in establishing a dictatorship is to disarm the citizens, warned a March 13 commentary on Jones Web site, Prison Planet.

In the wake of Poplawskis alleged murder spree, the killers friends and family members painted a portrait of a paranoid young man whose worldview was informed almost totally by the kind of conspiratorial themes entertained by Jones. Poplawskis best friend, Edward Perkovic, who also spouted white-supremacist rhetoric, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that his friend grew angry recently over fears Obama would outlaw guns. Poplawskis mother remarked to police investigators that her son targeted cops because he believed that as a result of economic collapse, the police were no longer able to protect society.

But hysterical warnings of government gun grabs and a socialist takeover of the U.S. are no longer the sole proprietary interest of fringe players like Jones. In the Obama era, Jones conspiracy theories have graduated to prime-time on Fox News".

A similar view, different writer:
They're coming to take our guns away

"If the demagogues on the right had any conscience, the Poplawski case would force them to realize that their shrill ravings border on incitement. But they won't. There are ratings to be maintained and a rabid base to be catered to. If every now and then some disturbed member of the base loses it, it's not their problem.

Poplawski's black-helicopter and anti-Semitic ravings put him at the outer edge of the right. But his paranoid fear that Obama was going to take away his AK-47 is mainstream among conservatives. That fear, fomented by the NRA and echoed by right-wing commentators from Lou Dobbs to Limbaugh, is ubiquitous online. A right-wing, pro-gun Web site I Googled at random, Theodore's World (slogan: "The PC Free Zone Gazette is American first and Conservative second. It is never anti-American!"), highlights several stories about black men who killed police officers. Commenting on one incident in which the suspect was wounded by another policeman, someone posting as "Bob F" writes, "It's too bad when the cop's partner shot back, he only wounded him. Now the taxpayers are going to have to pay for medical treatment and prison. The cost of a bullet is probably only .50 cents. Unfortunately, it's only going to get worse on the streets as Obama and his minions disarm law abiding citizens while criminals run rampant."

Im not a really big gun person. But between these crazies and every swinging dick, douchebag on the street thinking he is some kind of gangsta, if and when i move back home I will most definitely be packing a gun whenever I go out and will have a mini arsenal to protect my home.

There is way more than a shooting everyday in America. There are over 300,000,000 million people in the US. On average there are more than forty murders a day. This really isn't that many and historically for America it is very good. Just because "yahoo news" decides to cover the story does not mean it's important! The US media likes to talk about crime were the Korean media does not. The murder rate in the US has been decreasing for nearly 30 years!

In 1980 the murder rate in the US was 10 per 100,000, It is now 5 per
100,000.

It is a fact this is one the safest times ever to live in US in modern history! (last 100 years) The 1920's and 30's is when the US murder rate was nearly the highest!

This one is sure to get some coverage:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090408/ap_on_re_us/retreat_shooting

The city where it happened is the same city where I used to teach Korean high school students.

At first I thought something may have happened to my former students. But then the article said it happened the group meeting there was Catholic. My former students are Protestant.

Today I'd heard on the news that "child abuse is on the rise. . .some children murdered. . ."

Taiwan.

Not the USA, the one everyone wants to use as an example of their own moral, mistakes.
