So I am probably doing a public school teaching stint around August, I was just curious. Do pretty much all teachers take off for little trips around Asia/Oceania through out the year? How many trips can you cram in a public school year... if each trip is at least 4-5 days (normal vacation time I should think)?
this is a pretty big perk to me I am just curious how well others of you have maximized this coolness |

Speaking from personal experience, I would go overseas 4 times a year on average over the past 5 years ex-Korea.
Generally consisting of 1 long-haul trip out of Asia + about 3 short trips within Asia.
Chuseok: around September/October - most foreigners would get around 3 days + probably a weekend building it up to 5 days.
Christmas/late Dec: bits and pieces, I've always usually had a few days off.
Plus whatever your contract says and public holidays. |

Hardly no 3 or 4 day weekends. I studied the calendar and find I can take 2 trips. One in August and one in February if I stay the course. Chuseok this Fall is the only 3 day weekend. You don't have holidays creating 3 and 4 day weekends like in Western countries. Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Only 2 times a year does a 3 day weekend happen in Korea as most holidays are on the weekend anyhow. You can't go to Tokyo on a weekend. Maybe if you're close to Incheon you can do weekend airplane trips, but not practical otherwise. And expensive to not get many recreational days out of the flight. It's tough and exhausting just to make a Seoul or other side of Korea trip with only 2 days.
On a positive note, they're offering 5 weeks a year off to go travel. |

This summer I'll have 4-day weekends every weekend at a hagwon job which is Tuesday to Thursday only, though I'm farmed out Tu-W-Th mornings to a public school and work until late at the hagwon. Still, 2.5 mill for three days a week and long weekends every week works for me.
Summer travels in Korea to beaches and mountains are fun.
And the odd 4-day trip to other countries will be nice too.
I don't think I will ever go back to a five day work week. That's slave labour! |

Even better than a few 4-day weekends is one 77 day weekend. |

Hi,
In my case I can get away twice in the summer and twice in the winter but it depends on my camp schedules which can come in the middle and shorten the vacation.
If I plan them, my school gives me the chance to go abroad during regular Korean vacations. Not much to speak of this year but previous ears have been better and they are always there.
This time one Korean holiday overlapped with my winter break.
The chance to go home for a short trip comes twice a year.
I think I might use one of the long weekends to leave Korea but it does require a minimum number of days. Most of the time it works out that the travel time and rush isn't worth it. |
