How long and how detailed is it supposed to be?

My local police department said that they can give me a single-page document that says that my record is clean and it costs $23. Does this sound about right?

I also called the county police department and the lady referred me to the FBI. I'm getting the feeling there's more than one type of document and I just want to make sure I get the right one.

I think you need atleast a state-wide check for the US. They will accept a local police check IF it includes the entire state.

I did the FBI just to be safe. It cost somewhere between 18-28 USD, can't remember the total. Took about a month to get in the states. Than my mother sent it to me here in Korea.

The local will be fine, just ask if its a state-wide check. Than have them or someone else notarize it. Than go to the Secretary of State and have them apostille it. This should take about a week in most cases.

Wow a month seems like a really long time. The other thing is that I'm a 6-hour drive away from the Secretary of State's office...is the Consulate able to apostille it? If not, am I able to mail it to the SoS's office?

What state are you in?

Apostilles have to be done at the Sec. of State. I'm sure there's a branch closer to you.

Like I said before, ask your Police Department if it's a state wide check. Korean consulates can't validate an American notary or document. If so, they would allow us to do it there.

This is also important.

Note: The Secretary of State�s four regional offices (Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco) can only authenticate a California notary public�s signature if the county clerk/recorder (on the notary public�s stamp) first authenticates the signature. The customer must take the document with the notarized signature to the county clerk/recorder for certification and then submit the certified document to one of the four regional offices for authentication. Having a document certified at the county level is only required for authentication at our regional offices. The Secretary of State's Sacramento office can authenticate a California notary public signature on a document without the notary public's signature being certified at the county level.

So it would be in your interest to have the County Clerk notarize your check, and to get that stamp.

One last question...are fingerprints a part of the CRC, or will I be able to get it with just my ID/passport?

Not sure. FBI required fingerprints. Just to be safe, I would request that they be taken. Korea might be funny about it.

If its not avaiable, than don't worry. Just make sure the check is all fancy and has a shiney gold/silver seal on it.

How can can one go about getting a crb check from the US....if not currently residing in the US? My Amercian friend has asked me about this.

I did this over summer. Go to google and type in "FBI Background Check". On the search you will find the FBI site. On that there are 2 forms to print out.

1. The fingerprint form that must be filled out along with other information.

2. A form the charge your Credit Card about 20 USD or something like that for the shipping etc....

Fill them out, send them in and it'll be back to you with a stamp that hopefully says "No Criminal Record Found" on the back in about 5-6 weeks.

After lots of hand motions and being sent everywhere, yes.

Basically you want to go to the command post in your local Dong or Gu. They should have a Foreign Affairs office. They will ask you absurd questions like why you want to be finger printed. They even asked me why I needed them done for a visa.

Its possible! You just have to get the bottom line across.
