Which city should I see in Laos? I'd like to rent a motorbike of some kind and just look around. Failing that, I'd like to just be a tourist and look around.
Any tips? Which city have you been to or heard of? What's the cheapest way to go about this? I don't mind living in a hole for a week.
I plan on going for the last week of July. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. |

A week isn't much time. I reckon it might be most economical to use Kuala Lumpur as your gateway. You can fly on Air Asia to Vientiane. From there you can make your way up to Vang Vieng and do some tubing. Then, press on to Luang Prabang. Hell, a week isn't much time .... |

i agree that a week isn't long enough to do laos. the reason is that there aren't really any true 'international' flights into laos, at least the last time i checked. you can fly in, but it's on a smaller plane (fun, though) that probably leaves only once a day. so if you're really lucky, you'll be able to arrive in thailand or vietnam and leave for laos the same day, but i wouldn't count on it. the absolute best case scenario (which is highly unlikely, imo) is spending 2 days travelling (1 to get there and 1 to get back) and having only 5 measly days to relax. spending 2 days travelling each way (4 days total) is much more likely.
i'd wait until you have at least 2 weeks to spend in laos. the languid pace of the country is what really appealed to me, and i found that my most memorable experiences there were the things that came to me when i stopped looking for cool things to do. |
