I'm looking for a place in Seoul that sells authentic Western-style chocolate cake. No kiwis or tomatoes on top. No cherries or other fruit in between the layers. No mocha or "saeng" cream or almonds or whatever.

Just a simple Betty Crocker-style, moist, spongy chocolate birthday gateau (and no, Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts doesn't cut it).

Anyone know of a place that makes and sells such a thing? I'm willing to pay for quality. (If I had an oven, I would make it myself)

Yeah. I wish Periwinkle (a poster/teacher on this board) was still around. I bought a chocolate cake from her with chocolate cream cheese sour cream frosting once for 25,000 won and it was pure heaven.

I haven't been yet but I've read good reviews about Dear Chocolate in Chungdam:

I posted this last year when someone asked about chocolate cake:

you don't need an oven, you can make it in your rice cooker.

you can buy the betty crocker cake mixes at the red door or ezshopkorea also sells them, I think maybe ilovecookie does as well. they also sell the frosting/icing.

anyway, prepare them like it says on the package, then grease your rice cooker, divide the batter in half and cook them, one at a time, for about forty minutes each. I don't use the settings for the regular rice though, I use one for a milder temperature. if your rice cooker is newer and came with an cooking instruction booklet (mine did) it will tell you how to set it for sponge cakes and pound cakes (which the only cake koreans seem to be able to make). After I saw that, I figured why not a proper cake. it came out great, just like one baked in an oven.

hth

**edited to add that I checked it out and ezshop's price of 9,500 for the frosting is kind of jaw-dropping--the cake mix alone is less than that, 8,900, but you're looking at 20,000 won anyway for the both and then you still have to make it...

still, I think the red door's prices were better.

This assumes I own a rice cooker. I do not.

Icing (frosting?) is simply icing sugar, butter, hot water and essence all of which you can get at homeplus. Or you can make it from melted chocolate

To any potential newbies out there who may be thinking about coming to teach in Korea, but who are a little sceptical as to whether or not you'll be able to adjust to the demands of the Korean lifestyle, all you need to know about Korea and Korean culture is right there in that deliciously perceptive sentence.

He's not lying. I salute you Sir Frank.

Sure. It will take forever, depending on how thick it is, but just keep pushing the "cook" button down every 15-20 minutes and it'll work.

Don't know 'bout Seoul, but here in Chuncheon, thank heavens there's Creme-- German/British-trained pastry chef that makes the BEST milk, white, and dark chocolate cakes from REAL cream and cocoa, in addition to blueberry or chocolate cheesecake. His stuff can easily compete with the best Austrian/German pastries, let alone all that 'Betty Crocker" stuff people are recommending...

Right downtown in Chuncheon's "Myeongdong", on the second floor of the KFC building.

It's worth the trip from Seoul just to get some...If you're not happy with his Arabica, Chocolate Mousse, Chocoball, or White Chocolate (all delicious, heavy, rich chocolate) I'll pay your bus fare back ...Promise!

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

I'm sorry - you just gotta be desperate that you have to try this rather than wait until you're outta country to have a piece of cake.

seriously desperate. whoa nellie desperate. Laughing Laughing Laughing

btw, I don't own a rice cooker either. Shocked

try a toaster oven, they make good ones with baking functions and it's easy to find small baking pans.

oh. well, if you don't have a rice cooker or an oven, obviously you can't make it yourself. I just assumed as people have job-provided rice cookers in their places. sorry for suggesting something. Rolling Eyes

and yeah, if you have a old-style rice cooker then yeah, you will have to monitor it and keep pressing cook or whatever. I have a newer one which is designed to cook/bake/steam many things and not just white rice. it comes with a booklet which explains all this.

if all this is too much trouble for you then perhaps you shouldn't be complaining about the difficulty of finding good cake in Korea. all I'm saying is that there ARE betty crocker cake mixes here and you CAN bake them yourself even if you don't have an oven. ok?
