I did some searching and found out that indie rock and hip-hop are popular in Korea, and also that there's a small reggae scene. I even found out that there are some venues that play harder forms of Electronic Dance Music.

However, the one thing I've yet to find any mention of is what the Techno scene is like in Korea, assuming there is one. So, with that in mind, what's the word on Techno and Korea? Do those two words belong in the same sentence? Or is it more of a Japanese thing?

There is a young, but very strong EDM scene in Seoul, with several major clubs and dozens of smaller venues offering local and international talent every weekend.

As in most places, house seems to be the dominant genre in Seoul but you can find funk, electro, drum and bass, minimal, and other niche genres in a few key neighborhoods.

I would say the scene in Japan is a bit more mature and developed, but Korea isn't far behind.

Huh. So I guess all the talk of indie and hip-hop are just a reflection of the tastes of people on this board. Very Happy

Any idea on Suwon? Also, when you say House, what's the predominant sub-genre? I'm going to guess Electro House or Tech House, but there's always room for error.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you're not going to find a decent techno club in Suwon. Seoul, however, is only 40 minutes away by bus/subway so you won't be too far.

Tech and progressive house are pretty popular, but there are monthly parties at clubs in Hongdae that offer up different themes. We Love Techno at Joker Red, Twisted at Via, and other events at Cargo all offer different styles.

I hear young Koreans jammin to European style techno in their cars from time to time. I understand Seoul is where all the action is though.

I think it's safe to say that 99.9999percent of Koreans actually have bad taste in music.

Techno isn't big in Korea though you get used to it, the only place any techno happens is in the 2 larger clubs in Seoul, they get decent names, though the only real techno they have had in the past year has been tiga.

It's just too underground and won't bring crowds in. It's not even too big in Japan. However it's easy enough to find decent enough house and drum n base.

Advice- see as many techno djs as you can before coming to korea, then join a gym where you can play your ipod listening to dave clarke and sven vath to get your fix.

Not quite on the same topic, but can the same be said for Jungle or Dub? I know DnB can be found anywhere, but sometimes it's hard to find venues for Jungle. But, where there's Jungle, there's usually Dub.

Techno is getting bigger here.

Once a month you have "We Love Techno" at Joker Red in Hongdae. For my money it is the best bet for hearing quality techno in this city. I am biased though.

'Awake' have also brought out a number of international artists over the last couple of months: Shlomi Aber, Maxime Dangles, Audiofly X, Davide Squillance and JUAN ATKINS. Sascha Funke and Nathan Fake are on the horizon.

Some of the bigger clubs around town have delved into the techno sound a bit more recently as well bringing over bigger (more commercial?) names.

A number of smaller parties including Chigae;) also represent techno to various degrees.

If you're into techno you should be able to find somewhere playing it almost every weekend I reckon.

There's a "Techno in Korea" group on facebook that may help you. Street press and posters as well.

I agree he's got some great things to say about crystal meth too.
There hasn't been much good music or a great subculture since punk
