i am really considering doing a tesol / tefl while here in korea and just had a few questions regarding them ......
firstly, which, if either, is the best regarded of the two internationally, and secondly, have any of you got your certificates online via distance learning and how did you find it ? i saw a TEFL course offered by a company called ITTT and wondered whether they were any good and carried a good reputation as they have a course available online for around 300 US dollars ....
thanks in advance for any info / advice

Ive just finished my CELTA in England.I was warned it would be hard work and it certainly was...its English teacher boot camp!
I think globally (and certainly in Europe) it is the more favored. |

I'm half way through this course:
($780)
http://www.distance-learning.org/tlac/programs/tlccertif.html#intro
Several Australian Universities accept their courses as credit towards a Masters (I checked with the universities)
At my job interview recently the guy interviewing me (in Korea) had heard of the course and it possibly contributed to me getting the job over 100,000 other applicants.
It's studied by distance, They'll send you 3 text books and a list of questions and assignments based on the texts. It would help if you are currently teaching, but not necessary
Here's the 3 text books:
The Language Teaching Matrix Jack C. Richards
Approaches and Methods in language Teaching Jack C Richards and Theodore . Rogers
Teaching The Spoken Language Gillian Brown & George Yule
You have 3 months to complete the course, plenty of time really. |

I think there are two available in Korea. One with TEFL International, TESOL course and you can do a CELTA at the British Council. I'd go with the latter, CELTA is generally more recognized I think and perceived as slightly better, and I heard good things particularly about the British Council course. |

These are adult certificates, right? Does anyone have information about the certificates for teaching young learners? |

I don't know if this will help, but I did a Dip TEFL course (distance learning) with the www.englishlanguagecentre.com based in London. You can do it in as little as three months, or over a year. Okay! I have four and half years teaching experience, but this has landed me with a plum teaching position with the Royal Air Force of Oman. It opened doors!

There is a kiddie's version of the CELTA: It's called a CELTYL. You can do it instead of the CELTA, or you can do the 120-hour CELTA program, and then go back for a 60-hour CELTYL extension course, which will make you qualified for both. I don't know where you can do the CELTYL in Korea, though.
I did my CELTA at International House Barcelona. International House branches often have good training course programs (IH London has tons and tons of different courses you can do). I'm not sure if there's an IH in Korea, though, but there are some in Asia, I think. I don't think my certificate has really made any difference here in Korea, because it seems that most Korean schools don't really value it, which is strange because you learn so much there. However, if you're planning to work in Europe or the Middle East, I would highly recommend getting a CELTA, as that is what is most widely recognized in that part of the world. |
