Y'all,
I've been offered a proofreading gig... a part time position that might turn to a full time position from a notable English-printed newspaper.
I used to be a copy editor/proofreader back in New York, but that was a salaried position. Now my prospective boss wants to know my expected rates.
Of course I want to get as much as possible, but I don't want to come off as too aggressive or entitled. So I'm just wondering: do any of you have proofreading gigs here? What is the typical rate? Is it done by page, by word, by hour? I'm not expecting free housing, but how do these jobs compare with teaching in Korea? Do they help you with your visa (and is it an E2 visa)?
I'm pretty sick of teaching, so I'm pretty excited about this offer... but I want to make sure it's the right decision, and I don't know many details. For this job, I can work from home, so I might just wade into it and take a few hours a day at first...
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Woah, how'd you get the job? I'd really like to get into proofreading/editing, but I heard there aren't many jobs here in this line of work. |

It won't be an E2... it might be an E7...or there is some other one.. I forget what the other working visa is..
C or D something maybe...
its hard for them to hire foreigners for jobs other than teaching/entertainment though. You should be sure they're going to take care of the visa stuff and they know what they're getting into. |
