In the last two months I've heard two, first-hand accounts of students throwing chairs at their Korean teachers (both instances at hogwons). One was a middle school student and one was an elementary student. Could this be the new dong-jip? Neither was kicked out of the class/hogwon. The most disturbing aspect is that both students who related the information to me were laughing and seemed "proud" of those thugs.

Not surprising in the least. Yesterday, a student refused to stop smoking when I told him you can't smoke in the halls. I asked for his name--he wouldn't give it. I called a professor, who came and said she'd take care of it. I called later, and was told that she hadn't got the name of the student because he said he was sorry. 
Needless to say, my attempts to improve this university stop now. |

Uhhh...dong-jip actually means butthole, or literally "poo house". I think you were looking for "dong-cheem" which means "poo needle."  |

not at my school, they encourage the teachers to all carry sticks around with them and use them.....its rather disturbing I find actually. |

That's the real trick of it, isn't it. They (your school administration) expect you to enforce discipline, but the students have not been spared the rod; ergo, anything less and they could give a toss.

The fact that they didn't get kicked out says it all. They know their parents' money is all that matters, and when that's the case hagwons become a breeding ground for delinquincy. But it's nice to hear that Korean teachers have to put up with crap that hasn't happened to me since I last walked out the crapwon door. |

Teach at a rural high school where you already know all of the trouble-makers' names. Watch the expressions on their faces as you make them turn out their pockets and suggest that maybe we should go to the staff room for a talk with dam-eam seonsaengnim - this when you mearly catch them smoking off campus. |

Not in my classroom. The students wouldn't dare. They have witnessed or heard about the few times I have grabbed students by the shirt collar and literally dragged them into the hallway (except the one girl, whose stuff I simply threw out and she went to get them) when they didn't immediately respond to my "Get out!" command after they had shown the middle finger, dropped the f bomb or given me attitude when asked to participate. Five incidents in five different classes in three years at this academy and each time they and their classmates got the message loud and clear as to who's in charge and what they can get away with. Squat.

One of my students wouldn't stop imitating my voice, the instructions I was giving and encouraging his other group members to do the same. It wasn't him being cute. It was definitely him being a little snot. Told him ina loud voice, "GET TO THE ISLAND." It's 4 desks we have in the middle of the class for some exile/being stared at my your peers. He was straggling over there so I chucked his book and pencil case ahead of him. The pencil case slides off the desk and empties out onto the floor.
Later, he went home and cried. His mom calls the homeroom teacher to find out why, blah blah and gives a fake apology. Afraid her kid will stop liking English. This was the class president but I couldn't allow his bad behavior to continue.
Teachers 2- students 1
On topic. If a kid throws a chair at me then he's going to be tossed out of class like Jazz from Fresh Prince. |
