just started recently with PS, newbie with little experience.
Have to teach elementary 5th Graders 1x per week from this week.
The 5th graders follow the curriculum/book taught by the other native teacher at my school 1x per week and they will have me 1x per week....but not following the curriculum.
I have been asked to teach these 'open' classes, apparently on any topic. Does anyone have any ideas/websites I can use/reference? I have been teaching 3rd/4th grade recently, just following the book which is quite straight forward. For 5th grade in Korea I'm not exactly sure of their level of English so not sure if what I plan would be too easy/difficult for them as i'm new here and new to all of this.
Not exactly an ideas person so would appreciate any tips about teaching 5th grade PS elementary here/sites.
Thanks in advance |

| I would try to run lessons on the same general topic as the subject taught in class... Often when I'm teaching I run into similar topics that the book doesn't address and I just add in a little extra segment. For instance, right now my grade 5's are learning the "What a nice day!" chapter... the key phrases for the chapter are "what a tall tower!" and "It's very tall!". I would build around this and do a lesson on other adjectives not taught in the book. I have to follow the book, but I covered tall, short, thin, fat (heavyset when referring to people)big and small. If I was able to teach an open class like you, I would have taught more adjectives. For my activity I wrote those adjectives on one side of the board, a list of animals on the other, and had the students choose one adjective and one animal and draw it on the board, then choose students to guess, using the key phrase "What a ____ ____!". The kids loved it, but I felt limited not being able to expand into more adjectives not related to size. |
