I pulled a runner about 8 months ago, but now I got a new job with a new school.

My question is should I use my old bank account for my new school to deposit my money? Or should I make a whole new bank?

I am just worried if someone from the old school is sitting and watching the old account activity and waiting to 'steal' money or something... I doubt it since they didnt even ask me to pay for the flight or anything after I contacted the school (after leaving). They even canceled the visa and everything without me asking.

Do they have your pin number or a bank book? They shouldn't. They should only have your Bank number. Don't worry about it, if you were happy with the bank's services, stay with them. If not, go to another.

If an employer has made direct deposits into your account, they can pull that money back out by claiming some kind of mistake.

Just get a new one, it's easy. In fact, I would get it with another bank. Use the bank you had before for opening like a "bills" account. Keep a few months worth of bill money in it, nothing more. That way, if anything does happen, you'll be the one monitoring it not them.

Any bank that would want to keep its reputation would never allow that. There might be an exception if it is done within a very short time frame. My wife was overpaid once by accident, and she had to withdraw the money to give back. There was no way the company could get access to it. If a bank did this, you would cerainly be able to take action against the bank. Furthermore, he hasn't worked at the company for some time now, so I really can't see a bank doing this.

OP, if you like the bank you are dealing with, and are seriously worried, just close the account and open another one.

Unlike other countries, when you open an account at a branch bank in Korea, even though you may access it at any branch bank, the account is for that bank alone. I have dealt with this more times than I would prefer to have done. So it is possible to just go to a new branch bank of the same same, i.e. Woori Bank or KEB, and open a new account in the new bank. You will need to provide all the original information just like you did the first time, and the old bank will never be the wiser, because they are separate of each other for accounting purposes. I found this out the hard way twice when moving to a new city and trying to do something with my bank account. It is easy and normally takes a little time, but in the end it works out. Be sure to take all your documents, passport, ARC, address, etc.

I have lived in three different towns / cities (each in a different province), and bank staff have tried to pull this number on me each time I have moved. You just gotta face them down and tell them to get THEIR act together. I'm still operating out of my original small town bank account, even though I'm living hundreds of miles away.
Best advice I ever heard was:
In Korea, don't believe anything anyone tells you - unless it is what you want to hear.

Call me paranoid, but, if they helped you open the account (they meaning your previous employer), then definitely get a new account. As a poster said, it's quick and easy.
