Can't remember if this got posted, but next year, you'll be paying through the nose to run electric heaters.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said Sunday that it would raise the electricity price from December to March to the level of July to August in order to curb energy demand.

The ministry plans to finish the amendment on the pricing system before June, but the draft is expected to meet opposition from politicians and the media.

Currently, the electricity price is 15 to 25 percent lower in winter and in spring and fall, respectively, than in summer, since demand has previously peaked during hot summer days when people turn on air conditioners....

What on earth is the "Ministry of Knowledge Economy" and how do they have the authority to raise utility prices? That sounds like a name for some kind of creepy, all-powerful, shadow government. Was it 2MB's idea?

Is gas also more expensive in winter? It sure feels that way. I run my ondol maybe 2-3 nights a week max (on the lowest setting, the floor doesn't get too hot) and my gas bill went from something like 5000 won to 40,000. Seems like I paid less in the past while cranking the ondol higher and more often.

We live in a new Apartel-Officetel/Apartment which has all amenities built in but a much larger size. Month to month we average around 200-250,000won a month for gas, electricity and monthly maintenance costs. Our bill just arrived for last month 469,000won!! Shocked All the heat is off and we're wearing sweaters now, hope they don't increase the rates anymore as this is ridiculous!

We live in a oneroom and the prices have been steadily increasing on us. I just got the bill for last month and it was about 230K! 230K FOR A ONEROOM. That's almost 100K more than in the summer with the A/C running almost nonstop. How does this happen? We leave the heater on about 23 degrees, maybe a little warmer on extremely cold days (but never more than 25). Are we paying extra service fees for snow removal from Jan. 4 or something?

I'd just turn the heat off at night or something but I have a toddler who was sick for almost two months straight from mid-Nov to mid-Jan. Any tips to lower the bill?
