In getting a new job, I had to repeatedly give out my co-teacher's phone number to any interested schools.

She was very helpful and I've got a new job.

One thing I've noticed, any school that rang my co-teacher were content with being given a cell phone no. and they didn't seem to do any checks to verify my co-teacher is real.

They just seemed to accept the person they were talking to was my co-teacher.

If I ever have real problems again with a nightmare co-teacher and find nobody at my school is willing to provide a good reference, it seems quite feasible to let a Korean friend provide a good reference, via cell phone instead.

One other issue is the letter of release. If you're at a public school and are fearful they will decline your request for one, when you reach near the end of your contract, you could tell them you want to stay on another year.

If they agree to renew your contract, you'd be in a bit of a bind, but if they declined your request, they may be more willing than usual to provide you with this letter, because you had 'honoured' them with a request to continue working there.

Just some recent thoughts. Laughing

Or bribe them with the airfare for your flight home (you wouldn't get that money anyways Laughing ). If they don't have to fly you home and just give a letter of release, then they might take you up on it. If not, have them pay the severance and instead of a flight home, you could go to Japan or Thailand. Get your paperwork in order for the next school. You can probably get all this done without using up half of your severance.
