Does anyone know of any good Surf Camps in the Phillipines? That's what Wario wants to do for his vacation in July, learn to surf. He has this idea that PI is the most economical.
So far he's found two, one on an eastern island, Pacific side:

And one on the South China Sea, west side, north of Manila:

How's the surf there that time of year? Any monsoons? |

Sumatra surf looks pretty nice in July. But $1700 RT is a little extreme for a week of goofing off in an Islamic land on his own.
What about Guam? The flight prices look about comparable to PI--$600 range. He's looking for a camp where he'll be a part of a beginner's group and can rent equipment. His big experience is boogie boarding at the Maryland shore and OBX.
I pretty much stay out of his love life, but he has a steady girl in Korea that he's been with since last fall and they seem happy together. They don't get the same vacation time though, only long weekends to travel--they've been to Thailand. So he doesn't need to be going to 'surf camp' to be out looking around for something strange. She'd likely kill him and I'll be standing in line to finish the job. I've been warning this kid about HIV since he was four years old and the safe sex commercials came on tv.
I did spring for a box of Trojans for him to take with him after reading the boards here. |

| i'm definitely a surfing noob. i spent a couple of weeks in indonesia learning to surf and had a lot of fun. i recommend going to kuta beach (the main drag in bali), taking a couple of lessons from either a surf school or one of the locals, and then renting a board every day to practice. be careful about surfing coral (i think the phillipines and sumatra are mainly coral). i wouldn't want to get ripped to shreds on my first time out. kuta beach is an easy, sandy, friendly place to learn. |

I would second Bali. I just got back yesterday. A couple of my friends from Hawaii (I'm originally from there) came up and we surfed a couple of days.
Just go to Kuta Beach and there are a lot of surf schools there. Take surf lessons one day and you can gauge where you're at. If you think you have the hang of it, rent a board and go back to Kuta. If you really have the hang of it, check out a place like Canggu.
A lot of the locals will recommend places like Uluwatu, Padang Padang or Dreamland but these places are for advanced surfers.
The surf lessons might be $30-50 each. Renting a board for a whole day will be about $15. If you want to go to a place like Canggu, you could probably get a driver to take you there. $20 round trip includes the driver waiting for a couple of hours while you surf. |
