I noticed that a couple of my friends just got a nice, hefty raise. I have also noticed that a lot of starting salaries are around the 2.4 range with decent vacation. Are things looking up for us despite the condition the economy is in?

Maybe they get paid more because they have proven skills?

you give us very little information on the possible why they got the increase.

SNU is looking for teachers and they are offering a salary of $20,000 a year.

That's pretty low, isn't it? Particularly considering that they are the top school in the country and are probably hiring Ph.D. and M.A. holders with a lot of experience.

Sounds bad to me.

It seems that a few hagwon salaries are going up, but not many public institute salaries are.

I don't know about other provinces, but definitely YES in Jeolla.

Level 3: 2.0 mil W (BA w/out TESL)
Level 2: 2.3 mil W (BA w TESL, or B in Ed. or Master's, etc)
Level 1: 2.5 mil W
Special level: 2.7 mil W

Add another 100,00 W if you're in remote areas.

Basically all went up by 100,000 W, except 200,000 for level 2.

Due to the exchange, that's their (POE) reason for the increase even though the economy is not doing well.

Jeolla was 1.9 last year? That's crazy. Who'd live out there for 1.9?

These ESL salaries are a pittance of what teachers at home in the USA make with a bachelors in anything, except are about the same level as a rural Missouri teacher receives while other Asian countries are offering even less pay and benefits. Uggggh! Not even the Japanese can offer a deal as good as Korea's EPIK offer. WTF? Japan is super rich.

I understand that 2.2 million won used to be worth $2500, but is now only $1400. If anything, pay is decreasing while prices rise. That's blue collar pay I'm making in a job that required many years of study, risk taking, sacrifices, and higher than average intellect to achieve. Knowledge workers with leadership skills today are not appropriately remunerated unless lucky in the money with investing.

I'm thinking of looking at a gig at home next year, but all the in fighting, politics, and legal shite concerns me that it may be a risky headache. Rural Missouri is $15K to $25K less than big city teaching gigs with New York City topping at like $45K for newbies and rural Missouri only $24K. Don't go to the rust belt such as Detroit as they're fixin to lay off teachers. I did hear that rural pay is going to be going up to like $40K per year. Not bad for a single guy on an economy offering cheap bargains and much better prices than expensive Korea. Plus, might get to meet a new woman friend and actually have regular same gender buddies/friends if living in a Western country. Have to wait and see what happens as much is quickly changing in today's world.

True. They have been there for a year. But, that wasn't my point. I was simply drawing a parallel between renewal contract salaries and new starting salaries. Overall, from the CMA that I did not too long ago, salaries have increased.

That isn't to say they are great, especially given the exchage rate; I simply said they increased. That's all.

You'd have to pay me 1.9 a month just to live there, and then 3.0 more for working.

Your forgetting the cost of housing, taxes, and cars back home.....that alone can easily add up to $2000 a month in expenses... I don't pay any of that here.

A trend I've noticed with university jobs is to include the housing pay as part of the salary. It used to be that you'd see something like 2.3 plus 400,000 in housing allowance. Now, you're seeing 2.6 and no housing allowance, or maybe 2.7 with no housing allowance.

Read very closely... it could be that nothing has changed, or they're actually paying less. There are a few that are paying more, however.

my coordinator/coteacher told me a friend of hers is in charge of recruiting and hiring FT's to work for this university (if I understood her correctly) and her friend is always complaining how they can't get the caliber of people they want

(and since it is a top notch school, clearly they have high requirements, etc)

I asked - how much do they pay?

the asnwer - she wasn't sure, but "not much" since they are a public institution.

There's the answer to your problem (her problem) - I told her Laughing
