I have a lot of time to sort out a solution, but I thought I would start trying to figure it out early. My situation is complicated. My contract is over at the end of August. The date on my ARC is Aug. 27 which means I will need to get an extension to cover my last couple of days. I will talk with my employer about this. It is the least of my concerns.
I am married to a Thai national. We have acquired a dog here in Korea. We can't really leave him here because the plans for our future are uncertain. He must go with us.
We live in Ulsan.
Concerning the dog, I would like him to fly in the cabin if possible. Given the traveling distance and cost, it would be easiest to fly him out of Busan. After a lot of research, it seems as if I can only do this with Korean Air. I must fly non-stop because the restrictions on pets in places like Hong Kong are horrible.
However, I would prefer to save money making this trip. Again, the future is uncertain. I can get my wife a ticket on Asia Miles. This would mean a trip from Incheon to Bangkok with a stop in Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific. Ok, she is fine with taking the bus up there and doing her thing.
I want to walk back into the humidity of Bangkok with my wife and dog and face this new adventure together. I have seen flights that would put me there about an hour before her.
I could travel with the dog in the Cabin from Busan. Send my wife to Seoul. Have her fly with Cathay. I will wait for her in the international area. We have the SIM cards. She can call me when she gets in. I will meet her.
Does this sound like a reasonable plan? Am I overlooking something? |

I actually took the dog for free from someone who could no longer take care of it. He was rescued when he was abandoned at an E-Mart in a locker. As a person who loves dogs, I felt it was the right thing to do. My wife is stuck at home all day, so it is good for her to have the company. I certainly had my reasons.
We already have another dog in Thailand, so there is no reason to get another one. My wife is Thai, so we have family there. They have large plots of land where the dog can run free.
Jeez. Who cares why I have the dog? I am just wondering if my plan sounds logical.

I think the point he was trying to make is, is the dog what's making this so complicated? For example, if you left the dog here could you and your wife just fly together and be done with it? If so, then you might want to consider if the dog is worth all the extra trouble and expense for your trip home. |

Is the Incheon/Hong Kong/Bangkok flight that much cheaper? What would it cost you to fly the dog in cargo and both of you take the Korean Air non-stop flight?
Cargo isn't really that drastic on a dog, mine (not the current ones) have done it several times from Puerto Rico to PA and back again, and from Norfolk, VA to Gtmo, Cuba. They just need watered and let out to pee as soon as you get the crate off the belt. It might save you enough to fly together--minus the trip to Seoul?
