The girls in my MS girls club activity class have asked me to put a lesson together using songs as the theme. I've absolutely no idea what type of music they'll be familiar with, but am guessing I can probably throw in a couple of Beatles and Abba tracks.

I'd welcome any other suggestions.

-I Will by the Beatles
-Something by the Beatles
-Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega (Excellent for middle and high school; great for teaching present and present progressive)
-For No One by the Beatles (same as above; excellent for teaching the present tense, as it's used through the entire song)
-My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion (use this song as a last resort, of course)

Have fun doing cloze and gap filling activities Smile

We have a thread going on EFL Classroom and I just put up a lot of my favorites. This guy has a great write up of suggested uses for many popular songs.

I'd suggest using a lot of the Korean songs in some form or another. Many Korean artists singing great stuff in Korean. Use the Korean karoke found on EFL classroom for examples or go to the Korea Music area Loads of suggestions and I'd highly recommend the powerpoint and song for Father by Psy. Your students will love it and they can do an activity about their own father, either in writing or speaking...

On another note, make sure to show your Korean coteachers the "Korean New Wave" video I hunted up in our A/V player under Watch / Korean Karaoke...they will love these translated classic Korean songs!

Whats the point of singing to Korean music videos in an English class?

My mum was a Spanish teacher - I know if she said to her class 'Hey - lets all sing some Simon and Garfunkel' She would have got a few interesting questions thrown her way. Rolling Eyes

I gave them homework to bring in a English song with lyrics from youtube. Now I know what songs they like. You can ask them to bring movies, songs, t.v. shows in Korean or English and you will get an idea what they like.

Even if the song is Korean just stop it after 30 seconds and get them to tell you about the singer and song in English.

Tell them everything must be on youtube to save lots of time.

DD,

thanks for answering this. Context is so important and even if a song is in Korean, it can be a spin off and engagement activity for all sorts of productive language learning.

Anyways, my point was that most of the Korean songs I've collected are IN ENGLISH but sung by Koreans. Sorry if I didn't make that clear, my bad. There is plenty to choose from there too.

Cheers,

David

I'm going to use this:

The Real Tuesday Weld - The Day Before You Came

I must have left my house at eight, because I always do.
My train, I'm certain, left the station just when it was due.
I must have read the morning paper going into town,
And having gotten through the editorial, no doubt I must have frowned.
I must have made my desk around a quarter after nine,
With letters to be read, and heaps of papers waiting to be signed.
I must have gone to lunch at half past twelve or so;
The usual place, the usual bunch,
And still on top of this I'm pretty sure it must have rained,
The day before you came.

I must have lit my seventh cigarette at half past two,
And at the time I never even noticed I was blue.
I must have kept on dragging through the business of the day,
And without really noticing, I must have shut a part of me away.
At five I must have left; there's no exception to the rule,
A matter of routine, I've done it ever since I finished school.
The tube back home again,
Undoubtedly I must have read the evening paper then.
Oh yes, I'm sure my life was well within its usual frame,
The day before you came.

Must have opened my front door at eight o'clock or so,
And stopped along the way to buy some Chinese food to go.
I'm sure I had my dinner watching something on T.V.
There cannot be a sitcom or a game show that I've never seen.
I must have gone to bed around a quarter after ten;
I sleep so much these days, I need to be in bed by then,
Or maybe I read a while,
The latest one by Declan Gunn or something in that style.
It's funny, but I had no sense of living without aim,
The day before you came.
And turning out the light,
I must have yawned and dreamt my way through yet another night,
And rattling on the roof I maybe heard the sound of rain,
"I love the rain."
The day before you came.

Thanks to JongnoGuru for turning me on to it.

Well, back in my MS girl days, Spice Girls were all the rage. "Wannabe", IMO, will always be a popular track for that sort of thing.
Heavenly is a great band too. I recommend, "Our Love is Heavenly." It's twee which is essentially like if Shangri-Las mated with the Ramones. Her British accent is a little thick, though, and the pronunciation isn't as sharp with some slurring between words.

My instinct is to suggest all kinds of poppy empowering indie riot grrl crap. I don't know if that's what the kids like these days. :/

The Beatles and Abba may be fine, but they probably want to learn some stuff that their parents *don't* know.

Check out stuff from recent pop acts, like Kelly Clarkson, that are catchy and don't have "inappropriate" messages.
