I've just noticed that a lot of my students have what look to be scars from cleft lip surgeries. The normal rate is 1 in 600-800, and my school is 450 students, so there's definitely something abnormal going on. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm wondering if it might be genetically prevalent amongst Koreans, or if it might be something environmental in this old coal mining town. Anyone know anything?

I've noticed several cleft pallets also yet I only knew one kid that had it when I was growing up. Very strange.

I think in the US most surgeons are aware of the risks of scars, and know what they are doing, as opposed to some country folks who just want the darn thing sewed up as soon as possible.

Inbreeding causes a lot of bad things. The more diverse the gene pool, the better.

Yeah. This year I have my first student with a cleft lip/palette and I've been all over since 2003. Her English pronunciation doesn't seem affected by it at all.

The incidence of cleft lip and cleft palate is highest among far East Asians, Koreans, Chinese and Japanese, also Filipinos and Amerindians (North and South America).

Several children in a school of only 450 is a pretty high incidence. It runs in families, though, so if some of those kids are siblings that could explain it. Clefting can also be caused by environmental factors. A low-folate diet is one known cause.

It's nothing to do with the doctors. Country doctors don't do these surgeries. Korea has world-class craniofacial surgeons and cleft lip clinics at all the top medical centers throughout the country. This is a medical specialty where Koreans excel.

Sorry to interupt your Korea bashing, but the rates of cleft lip and palate is:

Koreans: 0.65/1000
Caucasians: 1.43/1000 to 1.86/1000
Native Americans: 3.74/1000
Japanese: 0.82/1000 to 3.36/1000
Chinese: 1.45/1000 to 4.04/1000
Africans: 0.18/1000 to 1.67/1000
Latin Americans: 1.04/1000

Though there are no exact figures due to sample selection, these are the best approximations.
