It is discretionary depending on your immigration office. My second renewal they gave me a two year extension, while I know of others who have gotten only one year renewals. No guarantee even though you should be receiving a two year extension.
Have you been on the F2 for two full calendar years? If so then you should consider applying for the F5. |

I got my first F2-1 visa on June 7, 2007. My current visa expires on May 31, 2009. |

F-2 visas can be extended for three years. Just got mine last month. Didn't even ask it was just given to me on my first extension after having the F-2 for one year.
The multiple entry permit, which is separate and must be requested by the way, is only valid for two years. |

Tob is right, it really is at their discretion, but every time I have renewed, it's been for one year. Since it sounds like you will have completed two full years, I'd go in and renew your F-2 and also apply for your F-5 as well. Hopefully if you get the F-5 it won't matter how long they renewed the F-2 for since the F-5 is indefinite |

A baby isn't a requirement, but it will speed up the process. My coworker who has a child got her F-5 is 21 calender days. |
