I'm moving back to Korea and considering Daejeon as a relocation spot. I wonder if those of you who live there could give me information about universities in the area. The good, the bad, the ugly. I'd appreciate any info. I see that Pai Chai University is hiring right now. Does anyone know if it has a good or bad reputation?

Thanks!

Of all unis in Daejeon, KAIST pays the best, but you need an MA Tesol to get a job there.

Hannam possibly next in terms of pay/conditions.

Chungnam is a national uni and the pay is OK... but you have to work at their unigwan... lot of o/t opps, though.

Paichai.... one of their professors phoned me once to ask me if I could find him a teacher.. I asked him about pay, he said 1.6 for 12 hours a week. I almost laughed.

Woosong used to be pathetic but I think it's getting a bit better.

Hanbat, Daejeon U and Mokwon.. about the same...

Pay in Daejeon is generally lower.. we are in the boonies.. haha.

Thanks so much for that list. Very helpful.

I lived in the boonies of Jeonju for 6 years. Believe me, it makes Daejeon look positively metropolitan. Wink I've actually only been to Daejeon a couple of times, but I'm picking it in the hopes that real estate and cost of living in general will be cheaper than Seoul. Also that pollution and traffic will be lower.

I do have an MATESOL and have heard good things about KAIST from a friend who worked there, but Pai Chai is advertising 9 hours for 2.1 (plus housing or 300,000 in lieu of) with 4 months vacation. I'm wondering if there's a catch. Seems a little too good to be true.

Chungnam National Univ. pay is low. 2.2 million back in 2007. not sure what it is now but prob the same.

Hear the students are okay and there are o.t. opps in winter / summer. nice offices for the English Dept. guys.

There is also a unigwon on campus and they work more hours but I think they get paid more.
