So, my girlfriend and I are looking to buy a digital camera at yongsan this weekend. Our budget is around 600 dollars, with about 100 dollars leeway either way. I'm leaning towards the Nikkon D80 right now, because last time I went and asked about camera prices they said about 600 for D80 a Lens and a case. Also, I picked up a Nikkon and a Canon in the store to test them out, and the Nikkon just felt molded to my hands, it felt very right. Is the D80 a good choice? Is there a better camera for the price? Any advice at all (including prices or better places to purchase cameras) would be very appreciated by myself and my girlfriend. Thanks a lot in advance.

At Yongsan they might try the bait and switch tactic on you. There are some sleazy sales people there, and any market in Korea.

So know what you want before going, and know the price your willing pay. They might say that they have what your looking for, only to then lie to you and try to upsell you something. Don't be afraid to walk away from someone, if they don't budge on the price. But it can take alot of time to bargain someone down to a decent price sometimes. Wish I had the ability for online shopping here, because bargaining is too much of a hassle.

There are some good shops in Namdeamun, and you could probably find a good used D80 there if you wanted.

Yeah, I would say your better off looking in the Namdaemun shops.

I think the Canon 450d/rebel xsi/kiss x2 is around your budget. It gets great reviews all-round.

Ok, thanks for the advice guys. It was good, and I'll try to take it, but I really suck a bargaining. Like I said, the nikon just felt better than the canon to me, but I don't want to have to settle for the D60. So we'll see how it goes. Thanks again Smile

If you can wait a month or two, the Nikon D5000 has just been announced. Search for it on the internet!

well you will have to bargain whether you go to Yongsan or Namdaemun. I think I would trust the guys in the Namdaemun shops over those in Yongsan. They all seemed fairly honest, I don't remember anyone really giving me a stupid price or anything. Go into several of them to see who gives you the best price. I like Hyosung Camera.
Just make sure you go there with a price of what you would expect to pay in your home country and try not to pay more than that. I used Amazon as a guide to what the prices should be.

Well at first I was going to go to Namdaemun, but I started reading about it and almost all the articles I read said that 3 or 4 years ago it was the best place to get a camera, but now it's the E-market hands down. I don't know, I've never been to Namdaemun so I can't say. Well, according the amazon my hopes of getting a D80 for 600 or 700 won (plus lens) is out of the question, as the cheapest new one on their is 750 dollars or something. That's according to Amazon though... I also just checked out the D5000 though, and that actually sounds pretty perfect as far as what I'm looking for. It's got the hd video capability that the 80 doesn't have, and it's a bit cheaper... thanks for the heads up man. And thanks everyone for the advice.

Careful in Namdaemun

I have a friend who went to buy a Canon 30D. A shop did the bait and switch and put a Canon D30 in the bag instead. He had a paper recipt, and when he went back there to exchange it, they told him "All sales are final". The police said there was nothing they could do.

Will the D5000 be available with a lens at the Emarket next month? I know its slated to release in May, but will it be available there? And for less than 1 mil. won? I'm not really sure how Korea works with cameras, if they get stuff later or earlier. Also, will they jack up the price because it's new? It's supposed to be 720 dollars...
