Hi everyone,

I'm currently in Iteawon and I'm staying at a motel. I'm applying for jobs and really would like a phone. But I have no ARC yet nor address, just a passport.

How do I get a phone under these conditions? Prepaid? Phone cards? And if I can get one, which ones are the best?

I don't have any Korean friends to talk or negotiate anything for me.

You realise that you will have to leave the country if you land a job right? Do you know the visa requirements for Korea?

As for the cell phone, I'm not sure if you can get one without the documents you mention.

Yes, I know. I'm kind of in a spot because applying for jobs without a phone sucks. I suppose I could just put on my resume "I currently do not have a phone number." Shit, in the states you could just go to Target, buy a phone for 45 bucks and get calling cards.

I'd assume that they have phones like that designed with the tourist in mind. Any country I've ever visited has kiosks in the airport arrival terminal where you can usually pick up a SIM card or cheapo phone for 10 or 20 bucks. They probably gouge you here though, but I've seen them avaibale in the most backwards of countries--they should be offered in Itaewon phone shops or at Incheon airport---I WOULD ASSUME. My folks will visit in summer, so I'd like to know the answer as well for them.

Yeah the passport phone is no problem if you do Yongsan or Itaewon, but it expires after 3 months I think so you have to go set it up again using your ARC, whenever you get it.

Go to Yongsan, get a cardphone.

Or post on Buy Sell Trade and buy someone else's card phone.

They will probably prefer email anyway; many Koreans don't feel confident on the phone to a foreigner.

You can get a phone with only your passport at Incheon Airport. No need to roam around Itaewon looking.

Texas Street in Busan (towards the North end) appears to have opened up a "used phone" store. Signs in English. I am guessing they could set people up.

Giraffe,

I used an SK Telecom rental phone from the airport when I first arrived. You pay 3000KRW per day but if you reserve it online you'll pay 2000KRW plus airtime. You'll need to register on the website: http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/RE/RE_EN_1_2_1_6.jsp but it's free to do so.

Remember, you can only return it to an SK Telecom Roaming center. There's a few branches at Incheon and Gimpo airport, and one near Jonggak Station. I hope this helps.
