I was told there are mixed saunas in Korea. Not the chimchilbangs, but actual saunas where the men and women shower and bathe to-gether. They are supposed to be quite common. The charge I've heard is W10,000 and there is no sex. Some require the men to bring a female partner. Others don't seem to care wether you do or not.
Anybody been to one of these? |

The sauna at the Express Bus Terminal on the orange line has a same-sex lounge were sauna-goers can watch tv and lounge in their next-to-nothings. Rent some sauna shorts and 'smock'(shirt) for a thousand won and hang out. It's underground near that big stationary mega-mart, in the subway-offside shopping tunnels. Just go down the stairs when you're in the concrete coloured 'old' terminal (not the fancy red one, 'center city' I think that one's called). |

There are lots of "JimJillBhangs" around which are often called 'saunas' or 'spas'. They are usually coed but as far as I know you have to wear clothing. (usually a tshirt and shorts that are provided with the entrance fee). |

I think you are looking for a place where men and women bath together in the same area/water/pool. Not in korea. Japan, China, yes. korea, no. Now, many spas/saunas around in korea where both men and women enter together, pay your money and go to sepertate changing rooms and meet in the sauna/lounge/TV area. But not actual bathing together. When it comes time to wash, you both go into the seperate bathing/changing rooms. |

China has those? Where are they often located?
I heard Japan they are generally separated in most of the country.. but I've heard moreso in the north they have some mixed? Is that right?
I was reading something about 'western' shame about nudity.. (more back in the puritanical day).. which created an embarrassment among many in Japan.. but supposedly Hokkaido among some other places this sentiment didn't quite reach (thankfully!) |

Germany
The Germany people will quite readily whip off their clothes for a swim by the lake. At the lakes (and some of them are in the middle of the city) around 50% of the people (women and men) are generally in a more advanced state of undress.
One of the oddest sights I ever saw was at a lake in Germany. A couple came walking down the path towards to the lake wearing a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, backpack, shoes and socks, even a dog on a leash; but nothing else!! I just had to do a second take!
Back to topic... I have heard that there are mixed saunas in Germany too but never heard of truely nude mixed bathing saunas in Korea.

Oh yeah, thats a Spencir Tunick photo. He's an American artist from New York, his claim to fame is to get masses groups of people together and be nude just long enough for a picture. My female friend was involved in one of his photo shoots in Barcelona.
He also has a documentary of how he first got started, he took a road trip across America with his girlfriend and camera equipment. Packed them up in a van (its all in the travel documentary). He went up to many complete strangers and asked them to take it all off - old people, young people, fat people, married people, whoever. Its a great film! Great artist as well..
I remember being in New York several years back when he getting started and hearing about it. He had a few hundred people go to Times Square, block traffic, and get naked. (He did it at 5-6am however). They lied down on the cement naked for 5 minutes, took the pictures, and then everyone ran away.. hehe.. funny stuff. That one was before he was famous..
Now he's so well-known for it however that I think most cities actually just welcome it and allow it. It seems its getting bigger and bigger and bigger - such as in the Helsinki photo. The Barcelona was pretty big one as well.
I also recall that during the filming of the documentary, he said he was so surprised how many really willing volunteers he had accross America.. particularly in places like Minnesota, Fargo in the Dakotas such. Different things in different places. Later he got to San Francisco and I remember he was actually complaining that they were TOO out-there that they wouldn't do as he directed. He wanted them to express his photo as he wanted.. and they were just putting their own interpretations and running around and having too much fun with it.. and kind of stressed him out because he wanted them to all pause and sit still for the photo.. lol |

I'm going to have to veto the Japan idea. I belong on a mailing list to a guy who has lived in Japan for seven years and one of the subjects one day was the mixed nude sauna/bathhouse thing. Before he got to Japan, he was told by many people who hadn't actually been to Japan that these things existed everywhere. "Pay $10, and hot-hot Japanese women who will all want to sleep with you will take off their clothes so you can see the merchandise before you pick them up to take home, or just spend hours talking or looking at hot-hot nude women" and whatnot
After seven years, he still hasn't found one such bathhouse. |

Somebody should invite Spencer Tunik to Korea.
Anyway for the life of me I've spoken to several Korean people who use mixed sauans. (mixed nude bathing) My Korean is survival, and I was able to get theses ladies relaxed enough to broach the subject, and they said they would take me if I wanted. There is one in Haeundai (Pusan), but I was too preoccupied with losing money at the casino to keep the promise (so to speak), and I missed my opportunity. If I can get down to Pusan again I'll approach this person and see if I can get into one of these places. |

This may indeed be a chimchilbang. My friend and I were brought to a chimchilbang by two Korean girls who SWORE up and down it was mixed.. however, they meant we could meet up in the saunas, hangout, and eat and all that in the shirt and shorts. (We assumed it meant bathing). Two very different things.
We had the exact same thing.. I must have asked 10 times.. each time I'd say it a completely different way giving off the image of nude bathing together.. and every single time they said 'yes'.. but once we got there.. guys bath on one side, girls on the other. The saunas and everything was open however.. you just have to keep on your shirts and shorts. The one I had to had one floor for bathing.. and 3 other floors for sleeping, pc-bang, eating, saunas, relaxing and just sitting around mixed.. (in the shorts and shirt).. |
