Guys,

I'm struggling to design a lesson about pets for my 1st year middle school kids. Has anyone taught this kind of material before? I've basically been given a topic and told to run with it; not exactly sure what to do.

I appreciate any thoughts/ideas/suggestions you guys can throw out there. Thanks very much.

There are some lesson ideas here: http://www.kindnews.org/teacher_zone/lesson_plans.asp

Also, listing animals that are pets - common and uncommon.
Specific pets and their care, habitats.
Design a pet - Characteristics, appearance, etc

Get a classroom pet for a while. A couple of hamsters or something that will breed fairly quickly - the students can observe and keep data on changes in the animal as it nears birth date - appearance of the young and how they change over time.

Good luck.

Word, thanks. Some of those lessons might be a bit too advanced for my students, but I'll see if I can't adapt the ideas.

Any other ideas?

Do what Gordana suggests. Then have a writing exercise. Put the students into groups or have them work individually. Print up or write out some animal flashcards. Each group will randomly select one. This animal will be the group pet. Have them describe it and give it a name and ask them detailed questions about it according to their ability. Next tell them that their pet has run away or is lost. Explain that they need to write a lost poster and icluded every detail they can think of about thier pet. When they have finished they can give a presentation to the class and you will have something nice that you can hang on the class wall.
