Considering the volume of negative postings about hagwons from teachers working here, do you think hagwons are bad for Korea's tourism industry?

Not really.

If you look at the numbers, there are about 20,000 E2 visas/year. How many of those work in hagwons? I'm gonna say half (talking out my ass). How many of that half have a bad experience (bad enough to trash talk Korea - I had a bad experience, but I tell people "Korea's great, hagwons suck") maybe a quarter...Tops.

That's 2500 people.

On the other hand, if a guy told you that he worked in France, his contract was broken and he got ripped off, would that change your mind about going there (on vacation)? Not really. If 10 guys told you the same thing, would it change your mind? Not really. Why? Because there are things you really want to see and experience in France. Does Korea have those things? Not really...that's the problem, not Hagwons.

The worst thing for tourism in Korea is tourism in Japan.

I am curiuos as to how many times has anyone on this site heard someone say they were going on vacation to South Korea?

I have heard of trips to Siberia! but never to S.K., ever! I guess people would rather milk polar bears with frost bite than visit the Hermit Kingdom.

Why would there be a correlation?

Do tales of bad experiences working at Micky Ds keep people from visiting the US? I don't think so.

Besides like others have stated and I mentioned in another thread there has to be the initial desire to visit Korea in order to be disuaded from doing so.

A few bad experiences at language academies will have very little impact on a handful of 80 year olds visiting war memorials and Japanese teenagers who want to snap pics flashing peace signs in front of the Lotte World carousel.

The worst thing for tourism in Korea is Korea, never mind Japan or China.

Obviously you haven't read about the Domino's "Word of Mouth" studies. Treated badly enough, a person is likely to tell over 100 people. Those people tell others, and so on. They figured out that one bad experience affects 10,000 favorable/unfavorable opinions. Factor that 20,000 x 10,000...every year.

How does this address the question?

The fact that people get jerked around at crap jobs has nothing to do with tourism.

Sorry man, ambiguity of the intertube strikes again. I'm not attacking you. I'm just saying that a bunk job doesn't make a place a bad tourist spot. The Op is embarking on a spurious association. Tourists don't come to SK for a host of unrelated reasons. This word of mouth phenomenon would only discourage job seekers. That's all.
