Had to giggle when I got to the part where the law school grad talks about South Korea being his only option.

I thought the connected article was great:

http://chronicle.com/jobs/news/2009/01/2009013001c.htm

I'm surprised he limited it to graduate level humanities stuff.

An undergrad humanities degree is, generally, quite useless too in terms of making you employable (unless you discard those organization that want just any degree).

As stated in the article, "education" is a big business, and there are a lot of people who are directly or indirectly financially dependent on you signing up for classes.

it's an interesting article.

however, why the absurd title for this thread topic? even if you put "loser" in quotes, why use it at all?

so someone sees few options and chooses to come overseas - to K - would it have been better to sit home whining about no job, no foreseeable options? or to get off one's bum and go where there is not just opportunity but an experience to do some good as well, not to mention the intl aspect of it?

I just don't get where posters are coming from using the term "loser." someone's priorities are screwed up in a major way.

*sigh* It's called sarcasm. That's why he/she put "losers" in quotes. You people are native speakers, right?

South Korea being his only option

I see 2 pages, but no mention of South Korea. I did a search for the word "south"

Anyway, these people majored in the wrong areas (example, "I haven't found a position that requests familiarity with obscure art historical literature from the 18th century written in Serbo-Croatian"), "loser" fits.

You illiterate?

"I also heard from law school graduates with $200,000 in debt who wonder what they were thinking as firms downsize and implode. "It is a nightmare," writes Benjamin, who got laid off a few weeks ago without a day's notice. He has moved back in with his parentsuntil he leaves to go teach English in Korea. "The pay is decent and the expenses are covered. I highly recommend other college graduates who are in my position look into this. But, my God, I have to leave the United States of America. What in the world happened?" (Autor would tell him to relax: "As for the law degree being underwater: Lawyers may get their shoes wet during the recession, but high school grads can't even see the surface they are so far down.")

It is to me... but I'm not not 200 grand in debt and trying to enter the shark-infested 'real world' of bottom-feeding, ambulance-chasing political 'wannabies'. Rolling Eyes My uni's law school only accepted one in twenty applicants.. but nobody said they were actually 'bright'. Wink

That's it I am tired of the term loser. Anyone who says loser now is a big loser. It starts after this post so I am not a loser.

I am still looking for the book of life so I know exactly what a loser is. Be aware I hear some westerners in some bars are challenging people to a coin toss. If you choose heads and it's tails they take your pic and you are now an official loser. Also be aware if you choose tails and it's heads they put the video on youtube and you are now a famous loser.

Same say that failure opens more doors to new experience than success. Probably some loser said that.
