| So my Korean girl wants to apply for a job at a wonderland franchise. Now I have heard many native speakers nightmare stories, but my question is whats life like for a Korean teacher? Are they also treated badly? |

I dated a girl that worked at one for more than three years. It's totally boss-dependent. She was in the process of leaving the school when I was dating her. She asked for more money than what she was making, and they offered her a whopping 500 won/hour raise.
Every few days, as her date of departure neared, her boss would offer her more money. It was up to 1,500 won/hour more when we broke up. She said that if the raise hit 2,000 won/hour, she'd stay.
Sorry I don't remember her totally monthly pull, but I know she had to do phone teaching in the evenings after class on many days.
I thought it sounded like it sucked to work there. |

| The Korean teachers at our school have to do 120 hours for 1.2 million.. But they also have do phone counselling where they ring the parents and tell them how Junior is going. |

| I don't think the pay is so good and they do work long hours. I found the Korean element at Wonderland quite unprofessional with very little english skills |

| One cannot compare the pay of a native speaker to a Korean teacher. Compare the job with another job for a Korean in Korea. The hours are still better than a typical office job. People at my office last year were working 10-7. They now work 9-7. Saturdays will be cancelled soon, so they will all work 9-8. I feel bad for them, but won't complain because I don't want to get trapped in their schedules... |

My first girl worked at the Wonderland in Haeundae New Town, Pusan.
I worked at the same time in the Wonderland on Geoje-do.
Her job was easy - for everyone. All the teachers finished their contracts, many stayed 2-3 years. They had nice apartments overlooking the beach.
My school was hell. Everyone quit left and right, including Korean teachers and even bus drivers. Everyone was worked to death.
It's totally hagwon owner dependent. |

Koreans in general seem to consider teaching in hogwons to be a crappy, dead end job. It's OK to do while you're waiting for a real job or a husband after graduating from college, but that's about it.
No surprise that most of us don't get much respect here.
1.2 million for 120 hours of teaching plus phone counseling sounds like a pretty typical deal for a Korean hogwon teacher to me. |

| As for everyone, it depends on the school. One of my friends worked at two different Wonderlands. One was the pits. She moved to a new one and stayed there 3 years. They gave her a decent apt, time off for vacations, and decent pay. |

Despite the fact that we make more than most Koreans here? The Korean Times reported Wednesday that the salary of the average urban worker (note NOT household) is about 1.7 million won a month. Then again it IS the Korean Times, so one has to take any info it provides with a grain of the proverbial salt. |
