My neice will be visiting me and she is a very sensitive Celiac. At home I won't have any problems following her diet but when we are out and about I'm a bit worried. Which foods, if any, in Korean restaurants are gluten free? I know soy sauce, dwen jang, and gochu jang are made with gluten. So I'm at a loss as to what she can eat. She won't eat spicey foods either, so nothing with peppers will work.
ANY IDEAS??????
Thanks!

I think the brown sauce on omurice would not be gluten free.
We don't eat pork.

HMmmm Well it would be pretty easy to find gluten free food in korea but the problem is that you both dont eat pork and she also she cant eat spicy food/ stuff with hot peppers which pretty much takes out everything with a red sauce. IM at a lost too. I guess shell be eating alot of steamed rice and vegies.

I still suggest Omuric though. There are some omurice restaurants that serve ALLLL kinds of flavors not just with the brown sauce. At the very least you could just ask them not to put any sauce on it. Thats the one thing about korea i dont like too much, They love their sauces and just layer it on there. which is quite disgusting in my opinion =p.

She could always eat vegetable kimbap, bibimbap without the red sauce. She could eat sushi without soy sauce. rice triangles and of course any of the western restaurants.

Oh, I have been here for 7 years and I am celiac. I will tell you right NOW, do not eat ANYTHING that has red pepper paste or bean paste. Both have wheat in them. If I must eat out, it is beef on a grill. With none of the Paste in the little dish.

Do not be fooled by the bip-bin-bop either. Some of the vegetables have soy sauce mixed in, just a touch, but enough to cause a reaction.

You can pm me if you want more information, but I will tell you now, I do not eat out unless I HAVE to, and then I usually just sit there and watch everyone else eat. Not real fun.

When I am in Seoul, or any other large city, I eat at the Outback Steakhouse. Just don't have her order the fries, they are cooked in the same oil that the other deep fried stuff is fried in, and therefore are contaminated, too.

I feel for the girl, celiac disease is really not much fun!

Like the above poster said bimpimbab veggies are flavored with soy sauce. The rice used in sushi and rice triangles is flavored with vinager. Another no-no for celiacs due to it usually comming from wheat or barley.
By the way, she seems to be sensitive to eggs at this point as well. So omurice even without the sauce isn't an option.

죽 (jook, rice poridge) might be viable. Tuna jook is really good IMO. If you go to the chain 본죽 I think they give you the soy sause on the side so ou could leave it out.

My Godmother is celiac and she lived in Korea for a year.. she rarely went out to eat because of this problem.. but I should think plain meat a la Korean shouldn't be a problem?
